What happens to Patroclus’ body once it is returned to Greek camp?—is remains miraculously undecayed Achilles response –Achilles return to the battle- Patroclus kills Sarpedon- Hector kills Patroclus- Achilles kills Hector- Paris kills Achilles (after Iliad ends) End of Iliad- Achilles re enters- Gets revenge on Hector- This isn’t enough for him because Patroclus is still dead- Book 23: Funeral games for Patroclus- Book 24: Meeting with Prim,- These last two books re-integrate Achilles into the human world- Theme is the care for the dead- even if it is your enemy Menelaus takes care of Patroclus’ body once he dies in battle (compared to a cow who has just given birth for the first time) Hector takes Achilles armor off of the dead Patroclus, but leaves the body (Menelaus retreats from the body) Zeus gives Hector great power- so he can also achieve kleos – his wife will never see him in Achilles armor or ever again so the power is his compensation Audomedon (Achilles’ charioteer) enters the fray (he tears out a mans guts with his hands) Antilokhos (Nestor’s son) reports Patroclus’ death to Achilles These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture.
