Clas 220 1st EditionExam # 3 Study Guide HippolytusBackground- Theseus (son od Poseidon): Great hero of Athens- Defeats minotaur on Crete, with the help of Ariandne (uses thread though the maize), but has to give her up to Dionysus- Forgets to put up white sail saying that he is home safe, so his father thinks he’s dead - Encounters Hippolyta, Queens on the Amazons - Has a son with her – Hippolytus “s/he who releases the horses” - Minos is a great king, his wife Pasiphae, is cursed to fall in love with a bull. Daedalus to make her an artificial cow to in in so she can have sex with the bull—minotaur is the result --- she is also Phaedra’s mother - Phaedra comes from a family of women whose sexuality is problematic The playHippolytus is a boy who wishes to remain so forever; he likes hunting, Artemis, and dislikes Aphrodite and everything she stands for. Aphrodite dislikes that Hippolytus ignores her so she decides to get back at him. She makes Phaedra, his step mom, fall in love with him. After she almost dies from wanting his so bad, Phaedra nurse tells her not to do anything. The nurse tells Hippolytus of Phaedra’s love for him. He flips out and cursed all women. In response Phaedra hangs herself and falsely blames Hippolytus for raping her. Theseus, his father, returns home and banishes him. Hippolytus rides away in his chariot and loses control. A bull comes out of the sea and attacks because Theseus put a curse on him (from Poseidon). Artemis comesdown and tells Theseus that it wasn’t Hippolytus’s fault but he still has to die. They reconcile. Aeneas dreams of Hector and he tells him to flee the city. Before he does he sees Priam’s virgin daughter, Cassandra, getting raped. Priam dies a humiliating death from Achilles son. Aeneas grabs his family and flees but his wife gets left behind and killed (Creusa). Book three Household gods come to speak with him and they tell him to go to Italy. The Harpies- ruin your food – prophecy it find his place they have to eat their own tables. They see Andromache building a new Troy now that she is remarried. They pass the island of the Cyclops and pick up one of the men Odysseus left behind, Achaemenidies. Anchises (Aeneas’ father dies)Book fourAnna encourages her sister, Dido, to go for Aeneas because then Carthage’s power will increase. They go hunting and it rains so they go to shelter in a cave where they have sex. Dido sees lightning and believes that those are part of a marriage ceremony, so she is under the impression that they are now married. Mercury tells Aeneas that he has to move on and continue his voyage. Dido becomes enraged that Aeneas is leaving and didn’t tell her. She decided to kill herself and right after Aeneas leaves she sets fire to all of his things and stabs herself with his sword. Book fiveAeneas holds funeral games for his father who has been dead doe one year. While the games are going on the women decide to burn the ships, but rain starts and puts out the fire. They leave and Palinurus dies because he falls asleep while driving the boat.Book sixDeadalus’ Temple- entrance to the underworld (story about the wax and feather wings). Aeneas must get a gold branch to enter the underworld. Once he gets it the souls crowd the underworld and Palinurus is honored. Aeneas tried to make up with Dido but she is back with her first husband. He goes to Elysium, which is a field where people stay for 1000 years and have a good time before going back to earth. He meets his father here and embraces him. His father tells him about the underworld and about Aeneas’ future. He leaves through the gates of horn and ivory (fake and real dreams) he leave through ivory (false dreams) Book seven- nineSo far someone has dies at the end of each book. He now invokes a muse (half way through). Aeneas meets king Latinus. Trunus wants to marry Lavinia. We meet Lavinia and her hair catches on fire and she runs around screaming but no one helps her. Juno creates a plan to stall Aeneas’ progress and gets furies from the underworld. The prophecy is fulfilled- they eat their bread ‘tables’. Aeneas asks Latinus for land and he says yes and you can also marry my daughter. Juno is furious so her makes Latinus’ wife Amata go crazy with grief about not wantingAeneas to marry her daughter. Turnus is now also enraged by the marriage. Ascanius goes hunting and kills a scared deer by mistake. Latinus refuses to close the gates of the temple of Janus – to mark that the city is at war. Aeneas goes and meets Evander and he agrees to be Aeneas’ ally in war. Venus gets Aeneas a shield for war (future city of Italy). Juno send Iris to Turnus and says Aeneas is out of town and to attack now. The ships set sail and turn into goddesses, so now they cant leave. Nisus and Euryalus go on a night raid (lovers). On the way back Euryalus gets killed and his mother laments. Ascanius kills his first man and in response Apollo comes down to congratulate him on becoming a man. Book ten- twelve The Gods have an assembly. Jupiter tells them to do whatever because he is fed up – he isn’t going to intervene. Pallas starts fighting and Turnus kills him and takes his swordbelt. Aeneas gets enraged and kills a lot of men. Aeneas tries to kill Turnus, so Juno helps him escape.Aeneas kills Lausus, son on Mezentius. Mezentius dies. A funeral is held for Pallas. Evander praises him. Drances blames Turnus for the war. Trunus gets angry and agrees to fight Aeneas one on one. Camilla comes and is a great warrior and fights in the war, but then she is killed. She tracks a man wearing pants and gets killed in the process. Amata begs Turnus to not fight Aeneas. Latinus and Aeneas strike a bargain- if he wins he just wants to live together side by side and they agree. Juno and Jupiter agree that when Aeneas wins they will continue to speak Latin. Juturna (Turnus sister) withdraws. When Aeneas sees the
