Movie- the Boy Next Door was historically inaccurate Nostoi- nostos means homecoming- Diomedes and Nestor get home safely- Menelaus gets side tracked to Egypt, but eventually returns with wealth- Neoptplemos (Achilles son) returns by land- Agamemnon gets home, but is murdered by his wife Clytemnestra (Helen’s sister) and her lover, Agamemnon’s cousin, Aegisthus- Note that being home is sometimes just as hard as getting home Odyssey- Odyssey is extreme nostos - Longest and most difficult homecoming for Odysseus (10 years after 10 years of war)- Achilles is the hero of Bie, or strength - Odysseus is the hero of metis, or cunning- For Odysseus, his Kleos is his nostos The Epic Cycle- only the two survived (Iliad and they Odyssey)- Odyssey looks back on the death of Achilles and incorporates the nostoi of the other Greek heroes. The Muse is invoked- Source of memory - Learn about the plot of the poem - Polutropos- skilled in all ways of contending Odysseys in the Iliad- not the most prominent hero but his key episodes were the embassy and the night raid. These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes, not as a substitute.Start of the poem- Calypso keeps him captured for 7 years because she loves him – they make love every night and have a good time, but he still missed his wife Telemachus- books 1-4 - About 20 years old- how many years Odysseus has been gone - Goes and searched for his father - Penelope had 108 of her neighbors trying to marry her and living in her house as her guest- she is also smart and delays in picking her new husband (knitting until the project is finished but she undoes the knots she makes each day during the night) - Athena inspired Telemachus to go and search for his father - Phrmios sings to the suitors (sings the previous epic) – Penelope hears his song (asks himto sing a different one because she misses Odysseus) - Telemachus tells his mother that Odysseus was not the only one at Troy who has not hada homecoming – first time he has bossed his mother around and stating that he is the one in charge and not his mother (he is not upset by the song because he doesn’t know his father) - Penelope experiences penthos- grief, lament, song of lament- when hearing the song while others experience kleos Assembly of Ithaca - his first assembly- he is growing up- he’s angry at the suitors because if one of them marry his mother they get the land and the house and Telemachus will get nothing - Antinoos- worst suitor- he is the one who discovers Penelope is unweaving the loom andprolonging the picking of a husband Telemachus at Pylos- He sees a sacrifice that Nestor and his sons are engaging in - Nestor asks Telemachus who he is after they have a feast from the sacrifice (being a good host) - He sends him to Menelaus because he might know where Odysseys is - Menelaus and Helen recognize Telemachus at the double wedding of their children - Telemachus looks just like his father and he cries when Odysseys disappearance is mentioned - Helen drugs everyone o Drug is nepenthe which means no penthos (grief) o The drug makes people not have reactions and stay clam no matter what they see o They have to drink this to talk about their past (since she was the cause of the war) - reminisce about the war- Menelaus wrestles with Proteus – sea god, (turns into different animals so you must wrap you self in seal skin and sneak up behind him)- Gets told that Odysseys is still at sea with Calypso - Suitors planning on killing Telemachus once he returns home Odysseus at Calypso - Hermes says she has to let him go and complains about double standards and how men can keep their mortal lovers and woman cant - She agrees to let him go home- Storm at sea because Poseidon was not invited to the meeting - Ino: sister of Semele and raises Dionysus after his mothers death- punished by Hera (her husband Athamas goes mad) so she escapes into the sea and becomes a sea-goddess Leukothea - Odysseus almost dies but comes back to life Nausicaa- Perfect young woman- almost marriage age - Nausicaa and friends bathe naked and do laundry on the shore and Odysseus finds them- Covers tree branch over his naked body (looks like a mountain lion) - She treats him well because maybe he could become his husband - Athens comes and cleans Odysseus
