Who refuses to speak to Aeneas in the underworld? – Dido Anna encourages her sister in love—she says that if she marries Aeneas then Carthage power will increase - Dido gives into her passions for Aeneas but her love becomes out of control (Aeneas doesn’t even realize how much she loves him)- She forgets about the city and doesn’t rule it well anymore – all the construction stops - They go hunting and it rains so they take shelter and have sex in a cave - After they have sex in the cave she believes they are married - Mercury tells Aeneas that he has to move on and leave Dido to continue his voyage to Italy - Dido is extremely angry that Aeneas is leaving (he tries to sneak out and leave without her knowing- but she finds out) (he is sailing in winter which is very dangerous) - Aeneas says that he will always love him and says he is not going on his own but becausethe gods are telling him too (also he says that they are not actually married) - Dido kills herself because Aeneas leaves – she is being compared to people who go crazyonstage- Aeneas leaves - Dido kills herself after he leaves—with Aeneas’ sword, sets a fire of all his stull on the bed they had sex in and then stabs herself - Aeneas holds funeral games for his father’s year anniversary death - Boat race – foot race (nisus slips on blood and loses- on the ground he trips another component) this is so Euryalus can win the race - Entellus completes in the boxing match and kills his prize (an ox) to show what he could have done to his opponent - The Trojan games - The Trojan women burn the ships – rain storm puts out the fire- Palinurus dies – falls asleep while driving the ship – falls of ship, wakes up, swims to shore, gets killed on shore - Daedalus’ Temple – entrance to the underworld – wings out of feathers and wax but goes to high and wax melts – his son flies too high and die - He needs a gold branch to enter the underworld These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture.
