Achilles reenters the battle because after Patroclus kills Sarpedon, Hector kills Patroclus. Patroclus is extremely close with Achilles, even said to be lovers, so Achilles wants to get revenge on Hector. Before he reenters, Hector take Achilles old armoroff of Patroclus and leaves the body (later returned by Menelaus). Zeus gives Hector a greatpower so that he will also receive kleos before death. When Achilles hears on the news he screams so loudly that he frightens the Trojan army. Hephaestus makes Achilles new armorupon Thetis’s request. Patroclus’s body is kept from rotting when Achilles is at war. At this point Zeus allows the gods to be involved with the war once again. Achilles goes on a killingrage and dumps all of the dead bodies into the river, which causes the river to get mad and fight Achilles. Eventually Hephaestus saves him by boiling the river. All of the Trojans return to the city except for Hector. Achilles and Hector race around the city of Troy 3 times until Athena tricks Hectors and Achilles catches him. Achilles stabs him in the neck and then drags his body around using his chariot. A funeral is finally held for Patroclus and so are funeral games. Thetis convinces Achilles to return Hectors body for a proper burial. The OdysseyThe Odyssey starts off with Odysseus being help captured on the Island of Calypso. They make love every night, but afterward Odysseus always misses his wife. TelemachusOdysseus’ son is now 20 years old and decides to go search for his father because his wife Penelope has 108 suitors after her and is running out of time to choose one to marry. Telemachus holds the assembly of Ithaca and then heads to Pylos. There is sees Nestor and Nestor sends his to see Menelaus because he might have information on his father. When he arrives at Menelaus he sees that Helen has drugged everyone to make them forget she is the cause of the war. He tells Telemachus that Odysseus is still at sea with Calypso. The suitors are planning on killing Telemachus upon his homecoming. Odysseus at CalypsoHermes says that Calypso has to like Odysseus go and reluctantly she lets him. But because Poseidon was not invited to the meeting he makes his journey home difficult. Eventually Odysseus arrives at the isle of the Phaeacians and tells them his story. The Journey1. Cicones- Odysseus want to kill people take their women and leave, but his men are drunk and lazy, so they linger too long and a bunch of them get killed 2. Lotus-Eaters- eat the fruit of the lotus (you lose all thought of going home when you eatit) – drug – loses more men 3. The Cyclops- Odysseus is a bad guest here—(Cyclops is the worst host- eats guests, drinks unmixed wine, no agriculture, not cities) – says that he will eat Odysseus last – Odysseus’s says his name is nobody and spears the Cyclops in the eye. The Cyclopsscreams nobody is killing me so Odysseus is able to escape. Ou tis= no one – as they make their escape Odysseus tells him his real name for kleos (he then tells Poseidon to hurt him) 4. Island of Aeolus – Aeolus gives them wind to get home, but his men open the bag and they are sent back to the Island right when they are about to be home. Aeolus will no longer help them because he thinks that the gods hate him and he doesn’t want to get involved5. The Laestrygonians- sinks sips with boulders 6. Circe-- drugs all of the men and turns them into pigs – Hermes gives him a drug (moly) toprotect himself Odysseus overpowers her and turns his men back into humans- make negations he has to stay for a year has her lover when he leaves he gets advice—he has to go to the underworld a. Tiresias- both a man and woman (gets turned into one) he says that men like 1 part sex and woman like 9 parts he becomes a prophecy b. Before he can go to the underworld his man, Elpenor, gets drunk, sleeps on roof, falls off, and dies – Odysseus leaves without him because they are in danger 7. The underworld- goes to talk to Tiresias – gets the same advice from Circe, advice is ignored, he gets to do unfinished business a. Elpenor- has to promise him to go back and bury him correctly b. Tiresias- tells him to not to kill the cattle of the sun god, and go inland and stick oar into the ground and make it a sacred spot c. Anticleia- his mother – just realize she is dead and he must sacrifice before he can talk to her d. Meets everybody else’s mothers – catalogue of women e. Odysseus asked to sleep and then the audience asks him to continue f. Agamemnon- killed by wife and cousin –says to watch out for his own wife g. Achilles- asks about his son Neoptolemus, says he would rather be a farmer than (reevaluation of his life) h. Ajax- refuses to talk to him i. Tantalus and Susyphus- 8. Hes on his way home 9. The visit past sirens- beautiful voiced and women try to take the Greeks they would crash on their way to the songa. Odysseus puts wax in his men’s ears and is tied up b. The song that they sing is about troy 10. Scylla and Charybdisa. Six headed monster- if you go too far away you go to Charybdis (whirlpool) 11. Island of the Sun- whatever he cant do is eat the cattle and he eats the cattle (stuck on the island and run out of food so they eat the cattle out of desperation) 12. rest of his crew is now dead and his is the only survivor Second half of the poem The Phaeacian’s take Odysseus back to Ithaca where he now has to reintegrate back into life. When he arrives he does not recognize the land because Athena has disguised it. Odysseus first goes to visit his loyal swineherd Eumaeus disguised as an old beggar. Oncehe sees that he is still trust worthy he goes to his still (still as old man). The dog sees him and can now die. Odysseus wins a fight with another beggar. The nurse recognizes his scar and realizes that he has returned. It is winter solstice. Penelope designs a task for the suitors that only Odysseus can complete (bow and axes). Odysseus wins and he, and his army, kill all the suitors. He then hangs the servants that slept with them. Penelope and Odysseus finally reconcile after he proves it is actually himself. Oedipus the King (BACK STORY) Laius commits rape and he and his wife have a curse places on them. In order to avoid it they abstain from sex and having children. One night they have sex and Jocasta gets
