Moderate Task: The user wants to share information about similar artists and music with their listeners.Hard Task: The user wants to make the music player aesthetically pleasing. Disclaimer: The templates themselves (for the music player) are not the focus of this part of our prototype. Thus, they have not been fully developed and are only included to make clear the parts of the prototype which were implemented.The PrototypeThe paper prototype is included along with this write-up.Design RationalesThe interaction style of our prototype is form fill-in. This is used because we want some input from the user such as song title, song name, etc. Some fields are text input and some are drop down menus. From the task analysis, we found out that users were familiar with web layouts, such as using forms and upload pages. Although it does take up a lot of screen space, it is extremely easy for the user to enter in data in pre-defined fields. The interaction style also reduces the use of a mouse or pointing device because we could easily move between fields with the tab button on the keyboard. This caters to universal usability. People who have trouble using a mouse or pointing device will find that they won’t have to use itall too often. Form fill-in guides the user with pre-defined fields and thus makes it more convenient for the user to accomplish their task. It gives the user a visibility of the system status. If we walk away from the computer to take a phone call, we’ll know what we were doing when we get back. The forms are an indicator of our current task.1) Homepage: Users from the task analysis indicated that they would only want to share a limited number of songs online at one time (approximately a size of an album). Due to this small number of songs, listing all the songs on a single page is feasible as the homepage and would provide the users with a single page to manipulate information for all of their songs. Entering of all information associated with a particular song is accomplished within this homepage. Having the homepage house most of the song input information applies a minimalist style eliminating un-needed jumps to other webpages to accomplish actions. It also reduces memory load because the single page constantly reminds them where they are in relation to the website.The user also doesn’t have to try to remember where to go to look at a list of songs they have already uploaded or to input song information. They are already there once they log in to our system.2) Action Tabs: Under the row for each song name, there are three tabs that correspond to the types user inputted information: song information, tagged information, and personal comments. The task analysis revealed that users wanted to share particular information about songs. The three action tabs correspond to the types of information users wanted to share. When the user clicks on an action link of a particular song, the rows of songs to the bottom of them move down revealing text input boxes that correspond to the information tab. The action tabs resemble file folders which mimics the tab representation used in browsers, and menus. The consistent position of tabs underneath the songs fits Nielsen’s emphasis on recognition of the actions rather than recall. The consistent positioning of the tabs also conforms to the rule of striving for consistency. It is easier for a user to use all the different tabs because they are all used the same way.3) Song Information Auto-complete: The Song Information Page under the tab “Song Info” provides an interface for the user to input information inherent to the song such as album, artist, lyrics, etc. The interface will display field information from the ID3 tag of the mp3 file if available. Users indicated that they wanted to share basic information about a song, such as artist, and genre. There is a burden of having to type in every single song name and artist. The auto-fill feature follows the rule of preventing errors because it reduces the chance for input errorsince it automatically imports song information from embedded data that may already be in the file. 4) Tagged Sharing The Tagging Page for each song is accessed by clicking the tab “Tag” underneath each song name. This page provides the user the option to associate tags with each particular song. Tags provide a way for the user to associate personalized keywords or “tags” with the song. These tags can be considered as functioning like “adjectives” the user wants to associate with the song such as “happy song”, a “work song”, a “Berkeley band”. Task analysis revealed that users wanted to include personalized comments about songs that could be used to discover other similar songs. These tags are used by the system to group songs with similarly associated tags. Music player templates will display links to artists or songs determined to be similar to the currently playing song according to the associated tags. Users can use the drop-down menu to view a cached list of formerly used tags. Users can also type in tags and have a drop-down auto-complete feature to enter tags. Each tag entered will beshown on a list. To the right of each tag in the list of entered tags will be an “X” to easily delete the tag. The auto-complete and drop-down listing of tags gives the user shortcuts to re-use frequent tags. It reduces short term memory load since users have a history of their recently used tags.5) Drop-down template preview: The Skin Chooser screen will have two options for customizing the aesthetic visualization of the music player: select from a listing of pre-built templates, or create a custom player template. The more common usage will be the ability to select from a list of pre-built templates of music players. Task analysis identified that people were familiar with changing the appearance of the music player by swapping different visualization templates. People expressed that the ability to extensively customize the visualization of the music player was not a top priority. Users were able to discover the mechanisms to change skin templates of their music player (windows media, or winamp) fairly easily. We leveraged this familiarity with
