COMM 305 1stEditionKey Communication AssumptionsOutline of Current Lecture1. Key Theoretical Assumptions a. Ontology b. Epistemology c. Axiology2. Key Communication Assumptions a. Process b. Transactional c. Symbolic d. Social e. Intentional Current LectureThe Simpsons Clip - it is a jarring moment. They are fighting with each other.Communication is a process. Communication is complex and multi layered. It is more than a message I send to you. It is more than sending and receiving messages. Communication is action.Thinking of communication as a process has that simplicity. Social support helps us heal. We are healthier by having relationships. Communication involves exchange. We are exchanging something. There is a continuous process of mutual influence. It also focuses our attention on context. Communication takes place within a context. Not all things have a direct translation. Our nonverbal have a direct function. Peace in the US means one thing versus peace in other countries. Our symbol use is some what arbitrary. When someone says dog we all probably think of a different dog. We use dog to mean what we need it to mean. Our symbol use can be fuzzy. We can mean the same thing with different symbols.Someone may say I forgot my wallet. They want you to pay. They aren’t saying that. The fuzzi-ness is useful for them. The fuzziness is useful. We can use symbols in different ways.COMM 305 1stEditionCommunication is also social. To treat only the social as communication is controversial. To say communication is social is to limit it to at least two people. The stuff in our head affects our communication. To think of communication as social focuses our attention on communication between people. We will also treat communication as intentional. Your roommate is reading the paper. They don’t acknowledge you. Are they angry? You are upset. Then you see they have there headphones in.Were they communicating something to you?You took something from their behavior. One can not not communicate. That is short hand for the idea of intentional. There is a separation between senders and receivers. There is a difference in making and receiving messages. From the perspective of sending messages communication is automatic but also strategic. If I am communicating I am not aware of every word I am communicating. Only in certain cir-cumstances like if you don’t want to offend, an airport, parents, lying. We have an intentional goal. He is not thinking about every word he is saying but he does have an intentional goal. You may have a goal to show disgust but you may not be aware that you are rolling your eyes or how you are showing disagreement. Our nonverbals are being read. The person reading the newspaper isn’t trying to communicate anything. The receiver is seeing something from it.Communication is about making messages and receiving messages. We don’t have a definition of communication. Theories of Developing Relationships1. Initiating and Developing RelationshipsCOMM 305 1stEdition2. Social Penetration Theory (SPT)3. SPT in Practice: Small Talk a. Characteristics of Small Talk b. Paradox of Small Talk c. Importance of Small Talk d. Recommendations based on SPT4. Building on SPT: Relational Dialectics…Why do some relationships develop from a first meeting and others don’t. How does relational development take place? First meetings are worthy of studying. Many people have trouble with first meetings. Many people have trouble and they want simple guaranteed recipes.People think first meetings are important. You will not have another opportunity to make a good
