COMM 305 1st Edition Lecture 12 Outline of Last Lecture 1 Answering questions d Response Immediacy Example 2 Communication Accommodation Theory a Three Patterns convergence Divergence and Maintenance b Pattern Distinctions c Explanations of Convergence and Divergence Outline of Current Lecture 2A Convergence Divergence and Maintenance 2B Pattern Distinctions 2C Explanations of convergence and Divergence 3 Speech Code Theory Current Lecture 107 and 108 are removed from readings examined on We will still have them available They may be valuable There won t be study guide questions on them In communication we try to be cooperative Lying doesn t work without the cooperative principle You may have to say prove it if you didn t believe them We believe people are being truthful We try to be accommodating Someone may sing the star spangled banner Someone asks you about it You don t say it went poorly but you say it in an indirect way Communication accommodation theory tries to explain the same thing and looks at when people are accommodating If a doctor can adapt there messages then patience are more likely to take the doctors suggestions Senders and receivers online favor language being used by the other We mimic each other when the language is being used by the other 2A Convergence Divergence and Maintenance Convergence pattern we see most often accommodation Documented with many accommodations theories like how fast people talk pauses jokes head nodding posture A growing similarity with interaction partners Convergence is similar to reciprocation Divergence looks at differences between interactions Welsh speakers interviewed by English man As the English man was derogatory his accent got stronger Maintenance is stability Breakfast Club Movie Clip We saw one converting towards the principle by standing up He says yes sir In the way they come in you see convergence People facing forward People miring each other The rebel enters and is quite diverting The nerd tries to converge towards the rebel He takes his jacket off at the same time The nerd uses bad words The rebel stares 2B Pattern Distinctions Upward versus downward Upward Saying yes sir Downward converging towards bad language Full versus partial versus hyper Compensation means something that contradicts the expectancy violation Close to full convergence between the jock and the preppy girl Incomplete patterns of convergence not everyone confronts the weird girl nail biting Hyper convergence hyper accommodation between the staff and the older people at a nursing home The staff used baby talk and spoke loudly They are doing hyper accommodation It is so over the top it is ineffective When someone doesn t speak your language you may talk louder That is hyper convergence Unimodal versus multimodal We can converge in one way and not in others Some behaviors are converging Others are diverging Women converge on some male behaviors but not all Converge on the kind of language use and the use of interruptions but not on others like laughter COMM 305 1st Edition Convergence and divergence don t have to be complete Symmetrical versus asymmetrical The actor both converged each other Both actors acted different from each other like the principle and rebel Subjective versus objective The nerd tells an awkward joke Outside observers can make sense into what is happening We can think of whether or not we are converting or diverging Subjective sense of accommodation They asked people there perception In objective you have a sense of how it is going You can think if you are accommodating You may think it is going great Your roommate may be observing and see that the conversation isn t going well and the other person looks uncomfortable 2C Explanations of convergence and Divergence 1 Natural tendency to accommodate We see people converging most often 2 Attraction We converge towards people we are attracted to both physically and people we want to belike 3 Power social status We converge towards people with higher power and higher social status Unless we are attempting to assert our own power and authority and status The rebel is diverging The nerd is converging 4 Social identity Most important We use convergence and divergence to express our social identity We most share that we are aggies We express our social identity by converging towards what we think it means to be an aggie At a sporting event to express we are aggies we stand whoop yell yell practice wear maroon These are ways we converge People may hyper converge We diverge to show desperation 2 er To think about social identity think about culture Culture plays out in our accommodation This theory is aimed at looking how people of different cultures converge How is culture included in expectancy violation theory Cultural norms influence how we react The theory tries to explain a pattern that goes across cultures Speech Code Theory Different approach to explaining how culture helps us answer the question of how we know what things mean in our interaction Doesn t make sense of all cultures but particular cultures An Emic versus Etic approach is if you are trying to explain one culture versus all cultures 1A Emic vs Etic Apprqches Etic is approached outside of cultures It is general The two theories we have discussed are Edic Etic looks across cultures Emic is a few letters from in inside Emic is focused inside cultures How we respond to something is universal Etic concern The theory is concerned about describing what is universal Speech code theory is taking an Emic approach
