COMM 305 tion 1nd Edi Theories of Theories Interpretive Perspectives Outline of Current Last Lecture 1 Historical Background 2 Metatheory Bingo a Form Rich holistic analysis and synthesis b Goal Situated understanding c Commitments Modified nominalist social constructionists subjectivist very leaks faucet or slab leak d Methods Interview observation participation grounded theory e Evaluation 3 Examples Current Lecture Grounded theory is a mythical observation We will think of it as how we approach theorizing and how we theorize The key idea in grounded theory is that grounded theory emphasizes starting with the data and the phenomenon under study All interpretive research foregrounds the theory Grounded theory is concerned about not letting In grounded theory the questions we asked were guided loosely The research questions we asked reflected saying something Grounded theory begins more open It has theoretical approach Heart broken in half professor enters and looks at the information while it is happening Looks towards a theoretical claim If we are beginning in the data it doesn t have any predisposed data The research attempts to have grounded theory They have questions grounded by theory It is broader questions Grounded theory doesn t mean the researcher is a blank slate and they began with no knowledge We can t study something without having past knowledge on it Our past effects our new knowledge The prof isn t a blank slate People mistakenly say that post positivism materialistic theory is still highly systematic Post positivistic there is no guess There are procedures for a fair test of the guess Interpretive is more challenging To be open to the data we want to make sure we are being systematic In grounded theory you see a systematic approach to asking questions Even if the questions Grounded theory focuses on a specific question they can ask Grounded theory and other interpretive approaches are systematic There are specific questions being asked in a specific ways COMM 305 tion 1nd Edi There are systematic strategies for taking notes There is a specific way notes are taken and analyzed There are strategies for analyzing quantitative data if you have it They systemize other aspects of the process What is walking the line is the first thing uttered in the film Question Set 1 How does the research process captured in the film reflect the characteristics of the interpretive approach He uses the language and tries to see what people mean by the language He moves in He tries to look at one specific place He looks at the conditions He describes it as being lacadatic He tells that the water was cut off in 103 degree weather That is relatable If it hasn t happened to you you can imagine a b Form Rich holistic analysis and synthesis Goal Question Set 1 Which quadrant does the research in the film fall into Are the observed aware of the researcher Does the researcher participate
