ADO 3 (Computational skills and understanding appropriate to the program of study) is the primary outcome of this course.2► Course Topics and Assigned Homework See Class Calendar for timeline of topics covered, exams and final. To help you learn it is recommended that you - read the textbook regularly, - work through the examples, - attend class regularly, - participate in class discussions, - do assignments and turn them in on time, - and form a study group with other students in the class. 3► Course Requirements and Grading System – based on percentages Requirements Points Percent of GradeExams**: Five exams at 120 points or 12% each.You may use no notes and no calculator. Tests will be cumulative with about 20% coverage of review problems and 80% coverage of new problems.600 60%Final Exam You may use no notes and no calculator.200 20%Homework, Attendance and Participation 200 20%TOTAL 1000 100%About extra credit….“The mathematics department strongly recommends that extra creditnot be offered in mathematics courses. In order to foster a collegiate environment,maintain the integrity of student grades, and provide for proper student placement andadvancement through sequenced courses, the department believes this to be in the bestinterests of both students and faculty. Extra credit is understood to include bonus points ona test or assignment, separate extra credit assignments, and other forms of providingopportunities for more than 100% credit.” Exams**: If you must miss a test, contact me before the test is given in class to make arrangements for a make-up. One missed exam make-up is allowed. Usually no make up exams are allowed after one missed exam. Instructor discretion applies. See Class Calendar for dates of exams and the primary focus of each one. Please note that revisions to the Class Calendar may be necessary because of unforeseen circumstances. It is important to attend class regularly to be sure you are up to date on these revisions. Homework, Attendance and Participation: Attendance and participation in class is very important. Please notify me immediately if you are unable to be at an exam. Once a test is returned, a make-up examis at the discretion of the instructor.- Late homework may be collected at the discretion of the instructor, once the answerkeys are distributed. 6► Available Help- Tutors (plus additional services for academic success) can be accessed by calling 796-8415 or by stopping by the Center for Student Success, Bert Walker Hall Room 123 - Students requiring special assistance (including those affected by the Americans with Disabilities Act) should contact the Center for Student Success. This is the first step in acquiring the appropriate accommodations to facilitate your learning.- The Math Lab, located in JM 244-245, is an excellent place to go as well for help.7► Other General Information - Instructional Philosophy: Education is a self-initiated, active, goal-directed process, leading to a change and/or expansion of the students understanding of and ability to use the subject material. The student is expected to be accountable for the learning process. The instructor should be viewed as a facilitator and resource person to assist in the process. - Academic Honesty: (Excerpt from JCC policy: contact Student Services for a copy of the Student Rights and Responsibilities Handbook.) Academic Honesty is expected of allstudents. It is the ethical behavior that includes producing their own work and not representing others’ their own, either by plagiarism, by cheating or by helping others to doso. Faculty members who suspect a student of academic dishonesty may penalize the student by…assigning a failing grade for the paper, project, report, exam or the course itself. - Audits: Must be registered during the first week of class. You will not receive a grade or credit for the course.- Withdrawals: Because courses vary in length, it is critical that you check the last day todrop or withdraw by going to www.jccmi.edu , under ‘Quick Links’ choose “Drop Classes”. If you do not wish to complete the class and receive a grade, because you are not happy with your grade or for any other reason, you must withdraw by this date. With the new participation grading system, the instructor cannot withdraw you after the eighth week. - Incompletes will be given only in accordance with JCC policy. (Excerpt from JCC policy; contact Student Services for a copy of the Student Rights and Responsibilities Handbook.) A student may request an incomplete from the instructor. The incomplete will be granted only if the student can provide documentation that his or her work up to that point is sufficient in quality, but lacking in quantity, due to circumstances beyond the student’s control. Furthermore, a written plan for making up the missing work within one semester must be completed by the student.
