Syllabus for MTH 095: Basic MathematicsInstructor: Karen [email protected]: Basic College Mathematics: Third Edition by Martin-GrayCourse Outcomes: Students will be able to:- Compute basic arithmetic operations with whole numbers- Compute basic arithmetic operations with fractions- Compute basic arithmetic operations with decimals- Demonstrate a basic understanding of metric measurement- Compute basic arithmetic operations with signed numbers Note: This course does NOT meet the mathematics requirements for a degree from JCC.The Board of Trustees has determined that all JCC graduates should develop or enhance certain essential skills while enrolled in the college. These are called Associate Degree Outcomes or ADOs. The ADO that is addressed in this course is:- Computational Skills and understanding appropriate to the program of study (ADO 3)Course Topics and Assigned Homework:See class calendar for timeline of topics covered, exams, and final.Specific Recommendations for Learning and Success:- Read the textbook regularly- Work through the examples- Attend class regularly- Participate in class discussion- Do assignments and turn them in on time- Form a study group with other students in the class- Seek out tutoring as neededCourse Requirements and Grading System – based on 1000 pointsRequirements Points Percent of GradeExams-Five exams at 120 points or 12% each. You may use no notes and no calculator. Tests will be cumulative with about 20% coverage of review problems and 80% coverage of new problems. 600 60%Final Exam You may use no notes and no calculator 200 20%Homework 200 20%Total 1000 100%About extra credit – “The mathematics department strongly recommends that extra credit not be offered in mathematics courses. In order to foster a collegiate environment, maintain the integrity of student grades, and provide for proper student placement and advancement through sequenced courses, the department believes this to be in the best interests of both students and faculty. Extra credit is understood to inclued bonus points on a test or assignment, separate extra credit assignments, and other forms of providing opportunities for more than 100% credit.”Exams – If you must miss a test, contact me before the test is given to the class to makearrangements for a make-up test. One missed exam make-up is allowed. Usually no make-up exams are allowed after one missed exam. Instructor discretion applies. See Class Calendar for dates of exams and the primary focus of each one. Please note that revisions to the Class Calendar may be necessary because of unforeseen circumstances. It is important to attend class regularly to be sure you are up to date on these revisions.Homework, Attendance, and ParticipationAttendance is an important part of you success in this class. You are expected to attend and participate in class sessions. Attendance will be taken by collecting daily homework.If you do not plan to attend regularly, you are advised to drop the class.Homework must be turned in by the end of class on the day it is due. It must be stapled in the upper left-hand corner, you name printed clearly in the upper right-hand corner.Grading ScalePercentage90-100% 85-89% 80-84% 75-79% 70-74% 65-69% 60-64% <60%Grade 4.0 3.5 3.0 2.5 2.0 1.5 1.0 0.0Late Work Policy- Exams are to be taken during class on the day announced. Please notify me immediately if you are unable to be at an exam. Once a test is returned, no make-up test will be given.- Late homework may be collected at the discretion of the instructor.Available Help- If you are having difficulty with the class material or any other class or college related challenges, please contact me as soon as possible. I ask that you turn the sounds that they make completely off. These devices are not to disrupt class at any time for any reason. If you have a legitimate reason for leaving your phone on (sick child, elderly parent, spouse in hospital, etc.) we can discuss methods to minimize the possible disturbances.Instructional PhilosophyEducation is a self-initiated, active, goal-directed process, leading to a change and/or expansion of the student’s understanding of and ability to use the subject material. The student is expected to be accountable for the learning process. The instructor should be viewed as a facilitator and resource person to assist in the process.Academic Honesty (Excerpt from JCC policy: contact Student Services for a copy of the Student Rights and Responsibilities Handbook.)Academic honesty is expected of all students. It is the ethical behavior that includes producing their own work and not representing others’ their own, either by plagiarism, bycheating or by helping others to do so. Faculty members who suspect a student of academic dishonesty may penalize the student by assigning a failing grade for the paper, project, report, exam or the course itself.AuditsMust be registered during the first week of class. You will not receive a grade or credit for the course.Withdraw DeadlineIf you do not wish to complete the course and receive a grade, for any reason, you must formally withdraw from this course.
