Phone: 517-937-7349 Email: [email protected] 1► Course Outcomes: Students will be able to do: • Compute basic arithmetic operations with whole numbers. • Compute basic arithmetic operations with fractions. • Compute basic arithmetic operations with decimals. • Demonstrate a basic understanding of metric measurement. • Compute basic arithmetic operations with signed numbers Note: This course does NOT count toward degree requirements at JCC. The Board of Trustees has determined that all JCC graduates should develop or enhance certain essential skills while enrolled in the college. ADO 3 (Computational skills and understanding appropriate to the program of study) is the primary outcome of this course. 2► Course Topics and Assigned Homework See Class Calendar for timeline of topics covered, exams and final. To help you learn it is recommended that you read the textbook, work through the examples, attend class regularly,  participate in class discussions,  do assignments, and form a study group with other students in the class. 3► Course Requirements and Grading System Requirements Percent of Grade Exams**: Four exams 15% each. You may use no notes and no calculator. Tests will be cumulative with some review problems from previous chapters. 60% Final Exam You may use no notes and no calculator. 20% Homework, Attendance and Participation 20% TOTAL 100%Page 2 of 3 (Syllabus for MTH 095: Basic Mathematics) About extra credit….“The mathematics department strongly recommends that extra credit not be offered in mathematics courses. In order to foster a collegiate environment, maintain the integrity of student grades, and provide for proper student placement and advancement through sequenced courses, the department believes this to be in the best interests of both students and faculty. Extra credit is understood to include bonus points on a test or assignment, separate extra credit assignments, and other forms of providing opportunities for more than 100% credit.” Exams**: If you must miss a test, contact me before the test is given in class to make arrangements for a make-up. Once a test is returned, no make-up test will be given. See Class Calendar for dates of exams and the primary focus of each one. Please note that revisions to the Class Calendar may be necessary because of unforeseen circumstances. It is important to attend class regularly to be sure you are up to date on these revisions. Homework, Attendance and Participation: Attendance and participation in class is very important. Homework is assigned daily; expect to do all assignments unless otherwise noted. Please notify me immediately if you are unable to be at an exam. Academic Honesty is expected of all students. It is the ethical behavior that includes producing their own work and not representing others’ their own, either by plagiarism, by cheating or by helping others to do so. Faculty members who suspect a student of academic dishonesty may penalize the student by assigning a failing grade for the paper, project, report, exam or the course itself. • Audits: Must be registered during the first week of class. You will not receive a grade or credit for the course.Page 3 of 3 (Syllabus for MTH 095: Basic Mathematics) Withdraw deadline: If you do not wish to complete the class and receive a grade, because you are not happy with your grade or for any other reason, you must withdraw by the withdrawal date. Because courses vary in length the withdrawal dates is different for different courses. You can find the last day to drop or withdraw by going to www.jccmi.edu , under ‘Quick Links’ choose “Drop Classes”. With the use of the participation grading system, the instructor cannot withdraw you after the eighth week. • Incompletes will be given only in accordance with JCC policy. The incomplete will be granted only if the student can provide documentation that his or her work up to that point is sufficient in quality, but lacking in quantity, due to circumstances beyond the student’s control. Furthermore, a written plan for making up the missing work within one semester must be completed by the student.
