Syllabus for MATH 095 Sections 2and 3 Fall 2009 – Basic College Mathematics Instructor: Melvin L. Waisanen Textbook: Basic College Mathematics by Martin-Gay – 3rd Edition Contact Information: Ph. 517-787-5424 E-Mail – [email protected] Course Outcomes: 1. Compute basic arithmetic with whole numbers. 2. Compute basic arithmetic operations with fractions. 3. Compute basic arithmetic operations with decimals. 4. Demonstrate a basic understanding of metric measurement. 5. Compute basic arithmetic operations with signed numbers. Note: This course does not meet the mathematics requirements for a degree from JCC. The Board of Trustees has determined that all JCC graduates should develop or enhance certain essential skills while enrolled in the college. ADO 3 – Computational skills and understanding appropriate to the program of study is the primary outcome of this course. Course Topics and Assignments: 1. Please refer to your class calendar for timeline of topics covered, and all exams. Specific Recommendations for Learning and Success: 1. Read your textbook. 2. Work through the examples. 3. Attend class regularly. 4. Participate in class discussions and work. 5. Do assignments on time. 6. Form a study group with other students in the class. 7. Seek out tutoring as needed. 8. The Center for Student Success has two social workers/counselors who help students with both academic and personal problems. Course Requirements and Grading System: ( 600 Total Possible Points) 1. Exams – Four Exams at 100 points each. These exams total 400 points which will comprise approximately 65% of your final grade. No notes or calculators are allowed. Tests will be cumulative with about 20% covering previous material and 80% covering new material.2. Final Exam – This comprehensive exam will be worth 100 points and will comprise approximately 16% of your final grade. No notes or calculators are allowed. 3. Quizzes will be worth a total of 100 points and will comprise approximately 16% of your final grade. Quizzes will be given at the beginning of the class period with no provision for make-up if you are late or not in attendance. Exams – If you miss an exam, you must contact me to make arrangements for a make-up. No more than one make-up exam is allowed for the semester(Instructor discretion applies). Please note that revisions to the class calendar may be necessary because of unforeseen circumstances. Grading Scale: Percentage: 90- 85-89% 80-84% 75-79% 70-74% 65-69% <65% 100% Grade: 4.0 3.5 3.0 2.5 2.0 1.5 0.0 Homework: Homework will not be graded but will be assigned for completion. Successful completion of your homework will make your success in this course much more likely. Available Help: Students who need assistance with coursework are required to have tutoring which is available at no cost through the Center for Student Success . Students with disabilities who believe that they may need accommodations in this class are encouraged to contact the Learning Support Services Office at 787-0800, extension 8270/8553 as soon as possible to ensure that such accommodations are implemented in a timely fashion. Other General Information: Instructional Philosophy – Education is a self-initiated, active, goal oriented process leading to a change and/or expansion of the students understanding of and ability to use the subject material. The student is expected to be accountable for the learning process with the instructor being viewed as a facilitator and resource person to assist in the process. It is the ethical behavior that includes producing their own work and not representing others as their own, either by plagiarism, cheating, or by helping others to do so. Faculty members who suspect a student of academic dishonesty may penalize the student by…assigning a failing grade for a specific task, exam, or the course itself.Cell Phones/Electronic Devices – All of these devices must be turned off and stored in a book bag or coat prior to entering the classroom as they are disruptive to the educational process.
