History 1378 The US Since 1877 Exam 2 Review Sheet Spring 2015 Part I Identification Terms 30 points SIX of the following terms will appear on the exam of which you will need to address THREE Each will be worth 10 points for a total of 30 points for the whole section A good ID will be more than a sentence It usually takes at least 4 5 sentences in order to respond to each ID or about half a page Be sure that you use relevant information from both the lectures and class textbooks You will be tested on class material so do not use Internet sources Each ID should have two parts a basic definition of the term including who what where when why AND the significance of the term or how it relates to a broader historical theme and or event For example if sharecropping were a term you would want to both define it and also explain the consequences of sharecropping what it meant for ex slaves that it was part of the failure of social reconstruction etc Treaty of Versailles 1919 BOTH of the following questions will appear on the exam of which you will need to address ONE Your response to the question you choose will be worth 20 points You must reference at least two sources from As They Said It and American Society Since 1900 when constructing your answer while two total sources is the minimum using more will improve your answer For this exam you are responsible for chapter 3 of As They Said It and chapters 2 3 of American Society Since 1900 Your response should be between and 1 pages 1 What was the goal of United States involvement in foreign affairs between 1919 and 1945 Did American goals stay the same or did they change over time 2 Whose interests did President Franklin Delano Roosevelt serve during his terms in office Consider not only FDR s own statements but also the words of his critics and the policies passed during his tenure when responding to this question Part III Major Essay 50 points TWO of the following questions will appear on the exam You will need to pick ONE and answer it thoroughly for a total of 50 points Make sure you address ALL aspects of the question Additionally you need to write in essay form with an introduction body paragraphs and a conclusion Do not write one long paragraph Lastly be prepared to write your essay and IDs in PEN not pencil 1 How did the United States economy change during the 1920s How did this change affect American culture What impact did these changes have on capitalists On the working class 2 What caused the Great Depression Consider both long and short term factors when constructing your argument Please discuss at least three possible causes in your response Ground your discussion of these causes in concrete evidence on how these issues developed over the course of the 1920s 3 What was Franklin Delano Roosevelt s approach to combatting the Great Depression Discuss how Roosevelt s approach changed over time How did the Thunder on the Left impact this change Discuss at least one program from the First New Deal and one program from the Second New Deal when developing your argument Huey Long 4 governor of louisian in 1930s 5 He was the founder of the Share Our Wealth program in which he supported distributing wealth to poor people including blacks 6 He thought that there was a left side in the US people which are the americans who thought that Roosevelt was supporting the big businesses and corporation and not doing enough to help the common man who was being destroyed by the depression they thought that the very few who were really wealthy needed to use their wealth to help the poor and distrivute their wealth among the poor 7 He was a threat to the new deal because of FDR support for capitalism 8 German aggression led war to break out in Europe in 1939 and the WPA turned its attention to strengthening the military infrastructure of the United States even as the country maintained its neutrality With Roosevelt s decision to support Britain and France in the struggle against Germany and the other Axis Powers defense manufacturing geared up producing more and more private sector jobs The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941 led to an American declaration of war and the nation s factories went back in full production mode This expanding industrial production as well as widespread conscription beginning in 1942 reduced the unemployment rate to below its pre Depression level National Industrial Recovery Act NIRA Part of the new deal act that congress passed as one of the FDR ways to assist the nations economic recovery during the great depression 1933 it lowered industrial production don t have to produce as mucj but they raised prices to make more profits for factories Gave workers the right to create unions Gave better wages Glass Steagall Act 1933 signed by FDR to help the economy after the great depression and insure the safety of the people s money during the economy crisis banks were making unsound loans because of the attraction of surplus capital and investing heavily on wall street the act separated commercial banks from investments banks to creat a barrier for consumers to have their money safe and so bankers cant use commercial papers deposits and interests from loans to speculate wildly on stocks commercial bank day to day banks in which you can open savings and checkings account investment bank brokerage firms where on buys stocks created to preserve capitalism by making sure banks always use sound practices for loans and invesments and cant invest with billion of dollars of capital Wagner Act Signed by FDR in 1935 Allowed workers to form legal unions and bargain with their employers This was important because it served as an alternative to industrial violence part of FDR s secnd new deal once he finally realized depression was an issure of consumtion The Wagner Acts recognized the crisis of the depression required greater federal
