History 1378: The US since 1877Dr. BuzzancoExam 1 Review SheetFall 2017Part I: Identification Terms (30 points)SIX of the following terms will appear on the exam. You will need to address THREE. Each will be worth 10 points, for a total of 30 points for the whole section. A good ID will be more than a sentence. It usually takes AT LEAST 4 or 5 sentences in order to respond to each ID. Be sure that you use relevant information from both the lectures and class textbooks. Each ID should have two parts: a basic definition of the term including who, what, where, when, why, AND the significance of the term, or how it relates to a broader historical theme and/or event. For example, if Sharecropping were a term, you would want to both define it and also explain the consequences of sharecropping: what it meant for ex-slaves, that it was part of the failure of social reconstruction, etc. Freedmen's Bureau Charles Conant Sharecropping “Social Darwinism”Dawes Act The Open DoorKnights of Labor Queen Liliuokalani The Great Uprising of 1877 Emilio AguinaldoHaymarket Affair Spanish American WarHomestead Strike Ida TarbellPullman Strike Margaret SangerThe Grange Triangle Shirtwaist FirePopulists Corporate Liberalism William Jennings Bryan The LusitaniaEugene Victor Debs Espionage Act Overproduction Camp Logan RiotsSurplus Capital Palmer RaidsA.T Mahan Edward Bernays League of Nations Imperialism, the Highest Stage of Capitalism Part II: From the Readings (20 points)BOTH of the following questions will appear on the exam. You will need to address ONE. Your response to the question you choose will be worth 20 points. You must reference at least two sources from As They Said It and/or American Society Since 1900 when constructing your answer (while two total sources is the minimum, using more will improve your answer). 1. Consider the image of the “Pyramid of [the] Capitalist System” created by the Industrial Workers of the World in 1911 (see final page of review). Based on the documents you read, make an argument in support of, or against, the characterization of one of the levels of the pyramid. Is this pyramid a fair encapsulation, or a distortion, of American capitalism?2. Discuss the balance between individual liberties and economic/national security embedded inthe assigned documents on United States imperialism and participation in World War I. Is theneed for national security and economic prosperity a reasonable justification for the limiting of individual liberties?Part III: Major Essay (50 points)TWO of the following questions will appear on the exam. You will need to pick ONE and answer it thoroughly for a total of 50 points. Make sure you address ALL aspects of the question. Additionally, you need to write in essay form, with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Do not write one long paragraph. Lastly, be prepared to write your essay (and IDs) in PEN, not pencil.1. In what way did conditions in the South change or stay the same after the Civil War? Consider the economic, political, and social conditions of the South during Reconstruction. Also, consider how the position of African Americans in the South changed or stayed the same during this period.2. What impact did the organization of agricultural laborers and the industrial working class have on Gilded Age (1877-1900) society? What factors helped or hindered the efficacy of these organizations? Discuss the history (including specific examples of their ideas and actions) of at least two agricultural or industrial working class organizations when constructing your argument.3. What was/were the reason/s for United States imperialism? What economic and intellectual ideas influenced imperial ambition? Discuss United States intervention in at least two regionsin order to justify your argument. 4. What factor/s motivated the United States to enter World War I? What was America's position prior to entering the war - did it change? Wilson mentioned that entering the war meant, "to make the world safe for democracy." What did this mean? How was democracy being conducted at home? Make sure to give specific examples.5. How did the United States economy change during the 1920s? How did this change affect American culture? What impact did these changes have on capitalists and the working class?Image taken from: “Industrial Workers of the World Photograph Collection,” University Libraries: University of Washington, accessed on February 2, 2015,
