Chapter 1 Learning Objectives for Test 1 1 What types of activities do clinical psychologists engage in Mostly clinical psychologists engage in therapy intervention Diagnosis assessment research administrative duties Teaching Consultation and clinical supervision Theoretical orientation the theoretical frame work that a psychologist relies on to conceptualize and treat clients problems basically the type of therapy they use clinical psychologists engage in therapy the most eclectic cognitive psychotherapy and behavioral the most these are some types of theoretical orientation 2 What are the most common employment settings of clinical psychologists They can work in different types of hospitals and clinics mental health centers medical schools private practices and universities The majority work in private practices 39 and universities 18 3 What are the five major components of a Ph D program in clinical psychology 4 6 years in school and 1 year internship 1 Couseworkt provides students with a strong scientific foundation 2 Practicum work supervised assessment therapy interviewing 3 Research Master s thesis and Dissertation at minimum different expectations it depends on the program 4 The Qualifying Examination can take many forms written oral literature review 5 The Internship usually one year done at the end of school 4 What is the scientist practitioner model How do clinical psychologists integrate research and clinical work Scientist practitioner model is a training model for clinical psychology and it wants to marry research and clinical work because scientists make better clinicians and clinicians make better scientists it differentiates clinical psych From other mental health professionals How They integrate research finding causes of mental disorders evaluation of therapy techniques development and validation of assessments research is about 14 of what they do on average Clinical Work they do clinical supervision overseeing the clinical work of graduate students inters post docs they also do their own diagnosis and assessment 5 How do clinical and counseling psychology differ In what ways are the similar They have a lot of overlap Counseling psychologists work with normal people with normal problems whereas clinical psychologists deal with people with actual disorders and not just everyday problems Both refer to themselves as therapists or psychologists Counseling psych work in colleges and universities usually in school of education as opposed to psychology hospitals and community mental health clinics Counseling psych is much smaller than clinical fewer training programs and graduates Counseling psych training program still involves a Ph D 4 6 years of school 1 year internship a dissertation lower research expectations than clinical sometimes more course work and practicum experience required 6 What distinguishes a clinical psychologist from psychiatrists Social workers School psychologists psychiatry medical doctors M D or D O that attend medical school and general medical internship receive psychiatric training during 4 year residency they prescribe psychotropic medications they don t do therapy but instead have 15 minute medication management appointments social work do group and individual therapy they have less training MSW 2 years they have fewer responsibilities than clinical psychologists intense involvement with everyday lives of their clients school psychologist mostly work with children with special needs conduct educational assessments IQ and achievement testing develop learning programs consult with teachers parents and school officials most obviously work in schools but also in day cares nurseries hospitals and more all of these professions do have some similarities such as dealing with patients subjects and almost all include therapy etc Chapter 3 1 What is the principal guideline for training clinical psychologists What does it entail the scientist practitioner model originally the Boulder model the goal is to marry science and clinical practice and have clinicians that think like scientists and have both skills going at the same time 2 What are the major critiques of the scientist practitioner model Critics deemphasize research experience why they came up with Psy D and favor more direct and extensive training in clinical skill 3 In what ways do Psy D and Ph D clinical psychology programs differ Compared to a Ph D a Psy D has more emphasis on clinical work and less emphasis on research a masters thesis is not required qualitatively different dissertation both programs have about the same number of applicants but the acceptance in Psy D programs is higher Ph D has a higher percentage of people from a cognitive behavioral perspective and Psy D has a higher percentage of psychodynamic psychoanalytical theoretical orientation There is not as much tuition waiver or assistantship scholarship for Psy D programs Ph D has a higher percentage of students entering APA internships Ph D takes one year longer because of more research 4 What are the limitations of clinical doctorate programs in professional schools they are freestanding depend on tuition so pretty expensive they offer Psy D which calls for little or no research training they admit many more students but mostly have part time faculty 60 of doctorates are in clinical psychology but most are not accredited Meaning that they have to do something else to get license professional schools are not a part of a university 5 What lead to the development of the Clinical Science Model pg 63 this model was a shift back to research training instead of clinical scientific clinical psychology is the only legitimate and acceptable form of clinical psychology 6 How will the increasing cost of health care and managed care affect the practice of clinical psychology What advantages might clinical psychologists have in a managed care environment TEXTBOOK how it affects clients are likely to be seen for fewer sessions and the psychological treatments administered are likely to be from a list of evidence based treatments some predict that self care or self help methods will be used more clinicians may utilize books pamphlets and handouts as a first line of treatment or as an adjunct to traditional face to face sessions it is predicted that more behavioral health services will occur in primary care and other less traditional settings like schools and work the trends in managed care will affect the employment outlook for
