Mammalian kidney functionII. HormonesIII. Osmoregulation in freshwater fishIV. Osmoregulation in freshwater fishCurrent LectureI. Mammalian kidney functionBlood pressure forces fluid into Bowman’s capsule, then the extracellular matrix acts as a selective filter. The substances allowed through are as follows; water, salts, ions, urea, glucose, amino acids and the remnants of toxins or medicine the individual consumed. Some water is reabsorbed and sent back to the blood vascular system. The descending portion of the Loop of Henle is permeable to water, whereas the ascending portion releases salts into the intestinal fluid. The forces of the ascending and descending portions of the tube cause a gradient to form.II. HormonesHormones are part of the endocrine system and are the chemical compounds being controlled by the endocrine system. Examples of hormones are steroids and amines. The chemical compound known as ADH is important for the regulation of water within an individual. If more ADH is released from the hypothalamus then there will be more absorption of water, however if less ADH is released then more urine is produced and not asmuch water is being reabsorbed.III. Osmoregulation in marine fishThe marine fish get water and salts by drinking the seawater and eating other organisms. There is excretion of ions and water loss that is facilitated by the gills that allow the removal These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes, not as a substitute.of these substances to the outside of the fish body. Marine fish have hypo osmotic internal conditions with isosmotic urine.IV. Osmoregulation in freshwater fishSimilar to marine fish, freshwater fish get water and salts by drinking the seawater and eating other organisms. There is excretion of ions and water gain that is facilitated by the gillsthat allow the removal of these substances to the outside of the fish body. These fish have hypo osmotic urine with a hyperosmotic internal
