CMS 357 1st Edition Lecture 14 Family Communication Notes II Cohabitation a 4x more cohabitation than in the past b treated like a relationship stage now A Demographics a Tend to be more young people b Substantial of seniors i Avoid drama ii Financial issues for pensions c Often live in citiesi Living is more expensive ii Highly educated living in urban areas both working B Characteristics a Tend to have less traditional beliefs about religion more egalitarian ideas about marriage b More frequent sex lives than those who do not cohabitate before marriage c More frequent sex even after they get married d Often use cohabitation as test they are testing the relationship before marriage e Most people slide into the decision not a big explicit making process a lot of the time C Relationship Stability a We have this belief that living together before marriage is not good for a relationship compare two sets of groups b Results small but reliable difference that those cohabitate before marriage are likely to get divorced c Unconvential theory does not Cohabitating people have untraditional beliefs those unconvential beliefs is whats making them less stable relationship partners d Serial cohabitates IV Child Free Couples the number of single people are increasing a lot the number of people choosing to not have children are also increasing A Important Distinction has to do with what we are gonna call other people 1 Child Less couples sounds negative against the couple 2 Child Free Couples sounds like children are a burden B Characteristics 1 not necessarily less satisfied than couples who do have children 2 look at women over 30 compared to men over 30 who don t have children the women are less happy about their lives
