CMS367 1st Edition Lecture 13 B Divorce 1 Time 2 Age 3 Economic standing money makes a difference in a divorce it is a change in the economic standing that is a significant problem the change matters more than the absolute finances 4 Quality of Parental Relationship children are self centered and blame themselves for things some children may say this happened because of me this divorce is my fault 5 Parental Conflict divorce is a difficult thing for everybody if a divorce greatly decreases a negative conflict between parents the children will be more beneficial than a family from an intact family with lots of conflict parents can go through these crisis and be ok or sometimes come out in worst shape before everyone has crisis but it depends on the way someone manages these problems I Single Parents 1 Demographics 1 3 of birds are from parents of single moms a The likelihood of being a single mom increasing if your education is lower b Only 6 of college grads are single parents c If you drop out of high school 50 are single moms d Fewer people today are getting married because of the baby e Number of Anglo white woman are single moms f 4 10 below 10 000 dollars a year 2 Issues Challenges a Having a baby gives meaning to their life gives you an identity you are a mom now b Single parents worry about their child being different than other kids c Single parents feel closer to their children than otherwise would d Single parents echelon to fall back on e Single parents will engage in role reversal i Teenager is suppose to not hear about their parents dating ii Financial issues parent talks about the kids about the stress iii If you have a temporary role reversal that there wont be a big permanent damage to the kid II Stepfamilies a Establish new relationships Depends on the type of relationships where is the other family member if there are kids on both sides and they come together b Establish roles c Establish rules themes traditions d Deal with dialectic between parental and parent child relationshipdialectic opposing tension i This is saying in step families there is an existing tension between biological parent and step parent and biological parent between the kids ii
