PSY 370 1st Edition Lecture 10Outline of Last Lecture I. Conformity and obedience.Outline of Current Lecture II. Tid bit of obedienceIII. Prosocial behavior Current LectureII. Tid bit of obedience a. Obedience can be a good thing. i. Ex. If you weren’t obedient in school during a fire then you might die. III. Prosocial behavior. a. This is voluntary and benefits others. b. When are we Prosocial?i. There are 5 steps that we take to decide to be Prosocial. 1. Notice something is happening, interpret event as an emergency, take responsibility for providing help, and provide help. Lets break those down a bit. 2. Notice something is happening- this is knowing that something is going wrong. Some ways this could not happen thus not cause Prosocial behavior to happen would be distraction. a. A distraction could be like I’m running late or on my phone.b. There was a study done to see this. People were told that they had to give an impromptu speech at a building on campus. Some were told they were late some were told they had time to. In the door way to the building a person was doubled over complaining of pain. The results were that 60% of those on time stopped to help and only 10% ofthose running late stopped. Some running late reported that they had not even seen a hurt person. 3. Interpret event as an emergency- this is knowing something is wrong but then realizing that it is an emergency. This could go wrong because of pluralistic ignorance. a. Ex. When you’re at work at a store in the mall you see a woman sit down to rest. You think of she’s tired has These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. After some time you see she is still there you go to investigate and see that she has passed away on the bench. 4. Take responsibility- this would be like from the example above the part of you investigating. a. This could go wrong but diffusion of responsibility. You assume that someone else is/has already helped so you don’t. b. An experiment was done on this as well. People were set up in an interview type situation. They communicated through intercom. The first set it was just the person and the confederate. The second was the person with 2 other people and the third was with the person and 3 other people. During the interviews one person pretented to have a seizure. Within 2 minutues or less 100% of the first went for help. 80% went in the second group and 60% went with the last group. The last group’s percent was so low because they assumed the other people had gone for
