Deindividuation cont. a. Do we perform better or worse? a. Triplett discovered that being in the presence of others facilitates behavior. i. He did this by watching children roll in fishing wire. When they reeled by themselves they went slower than with others with them. 1. Social facilitate- being in the presence of others effects our behavior. b. However, Zajonc found that it depends on the task. i. He said that being near someone increases arousal that strengthens the dominant response (the response that is most likely to happen.) 1. There are 2 responses. Easy and hard. An easy response brings on the correct reaction the hard brings out the wrong response. a. For example, golf. When going to a golf clubs sale and testing out your set after only having one lesion trying to hit a virtual ball in front of lots of people would be hard because you are not use to golf. But when someone comesto try whose been playing for years it would be an easy task and the lots of people would help them in their performance because they are used to it. 2. So when someone is by themselves they may agree not to go sky diving but when in a group they may change it to go because they group made them feel okay about by having others with you. c. Groupthink- when in a group the need for harmony is needed so people will often go with the same decision because they want harmony. Iv. Power in Groupsa. If a person has more power they won’t think much about their decisions while those will less power will think more about theirs. a. Ex.
