Situations can affect our self-awareness i. Private self-awareness- increases adherence to personal standardsii. Public self- awareness- increases adherence to societal standards 1. From self-awareness theory (Duval and Wicklund) c. Personalities can also increase self-awareness i. Private self-consciousness- you look more at your own behaviorii. Public self-consciousness- you look more at what others see you as and think of you as. II. Self- regulation a. Cybernetic theory of self-regulationi. Would give people a test, then operation, then test again, and then option to exit. ii. Wanted to know what we thought about while testing.1. Some thought actual (kind of person you actually are) some thought ought ( kind of person you ought to be) and some thought ideal (kind of person you would like to be) iii. When they were brought to the operation some people’s thoughts didn’t match up their actual person1. Ought – actual = guilt, shame, anxiety 2. Ideal – actual = disappointment, sadness, depressiona. Negative emotions can motivate a change in behavior.iv. What happens when you can’t fix the discrepancies and exit? 1. It lead to drug and alcohol abuse, binge eating, and suicide. v.
