Conformity a. Yielding to perceived social pressure i. Ex. Cheering at sports games. Everyone does it so you feel the need to join in. III. What motives us to conform?a. Conformity is an ambiguous reality.i. Ex. Lane changes. When you see that many cars have switched lanes you follow suit because you think they have seen something you can not see yet. b. Informational influence= in an unclear situation you look to others for info/normsi. Norms are what is considered a regular or accepted in that situation. c. Private acceptance= is a personal change that happens because the person wantsto conform. d. Normative influence= know what the correct answer is but change it to fit in. i. Ex. Line judgment study (asch). This was when people would say which line fit line A. the answer was clear but in the study there was confederates that would say the wrong answer. It turned out that the ones being tested would say the wrong answer even though they knew it was wrong. They did it to fit inIV. The costs of not conforming. a. You get left out for not going in the group. i. Johnny Rocco study 1. Group discussion would happen about juvenile kid Johnny.2. Some group members were real participates some were confederates. a. 1-modal would just go with what the crowd wantedThese notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture.
