BIO 1150 1st Edition Lecture 2Lamarck’s Hypothesis of Evolution- species evolve because of the use or disuse of body parts along with inheritance- This theory has comeback because of epigenetics- Epigenetics- study of environment effect on DNACharles Darwin (1809-1882)- - scientist who traveled to the Galapagos island - founded the concept of Evolutionary theory- natural selection and descent with modification- wrote The Origin of SpeciesInduced variation (artificial selection) - breeding organisms to obtain desired traits in offspringObservations:1. Members of a population vary in inherited traits2. Species produce more offspring than environment can support (a number of the offspring die)Inference:1. Descent With Modification- organisms with better traits will have more surviving offspring2. Natural selection- the more adapted to the environment organisms with survive and reproduce and lead to the increase in these desirable traits over a period of timeConsequences of natural selection:These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes, not as a substitute.- Adaptation- Individuals survive better than others- Descent with modification- Organisms are adequate, not optimalEvidence for Evolution:- Fossil record- Homology- similarity from common ancestors- Comparative embryology- shows the similarities between embryos of various speciesTake Note:- Biogeography- geographic distribution of species shows evolution- Populations evolve, individuals do not- Natural selection can only increase or decrease heritable traits that vary in a population- Adaptations change with various environments. So, if the environment changes the natural selection will change.- Natural selection “chooses” the already occurring most desirable traits, they are not “made”- Environment change means that new traits may be desirable Works Cited- Goldstein, David.
