BIO 1150 1st Edition Lecture 1All organisms are different and that occurred because of evolution- Evolution- descent with modification and (or) natural selection- There are 1.4 million different known species and an estimated 30 million unknownThis diversity is not evenly distributed throughout the world- This is based on environmental factors ie. Seasons, climate etc.- More diverse around the equatorEarth is billion years old, eras organize this time (see Table 25.1)- We know this because of fossils and how they are dated- Fossils are dated by sedimentary strata and radiometric datingContinental Drift- the movement of continents because of tectonic plates shifting- Pangaea’s Effects (250 million years old) - Ocean basins getting deeper- Reduction in shallow water- Colder/drier climateBiodiversity- balance between speciation and extinction- Speciation- the process of new species forming due to evolution- Extinction-end of a group of organismsThese notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture.
