Syllabus (PSYC/BIOL 3322, Section 001 — INTRO BEHAVIORAL NEUROSCIENCE) Instructor’s Name: Dr. Yuan B Peng Office Number: LS 503 Office Telephone Number: 817/272-5222 Email Address: [email protected]: http://www.uta.edu/psychology/faculty/faculty.htmOffice Hours: T 12:30-1:30 or by appointment Course Number, Section Number, and Course Title: BEHAVIORAL NEUROSCIENCE, PSYC/BIOL 3322, Section 001 Time and Place of Class Meetings: Tue, Thur, 9:30 – 10:50 am, LS 119 Description of Course Content: This course will provide a comprehensive review of physiological processes that underlie animal and human behavior. Student Learning Outcomes: Students are expected to learn how nervous system works and what the underlying neural mechanisms that control our behavior are. Topics will include: anatomical structure, molecular basis, sensory and motor systems, neurotransmitters, control of hunger, thirst, temperature, emotional disorders and schizophrenia, etc. Requirements: NA Required Textbooks and Other Course Materials: Biological Psychology, 9th edition by James W. Kalat. For lecture notes and announcement, please go to WebCT at http://www.uta.edu/webct/index.htm Descriptions of major assignments and examinations with due dates: There will be THREE exams (Final Exam Non-Comprehensive). Tentative Lecture/Topic Schedule: Chapter 1 The major issues Chapter 2 Nerve cells and nerve impulses Chapter 3 Synapses Chapter 4 Anatomy of the nervous system Chapter 5 Development and plasticity of the brain Exam 1 (9:30 - 10:50) Thursday, 02/14/2008 Chapter 6 Vision Chapter 7 The other sensory systems Chapter 8 Movement Chapter 9 Wakefulness and sleep Chapter 10 Internal body states Exam 2 (9:30 - 10:50) Thursday, 03/27/2008 Chapter 12 Emotional behaviors Chapter 13 The biology of learning and memoryChapter 14 Cognitive Functions Chapter 15 Psychological disorders Make-up Exam(s) (9:30 – 10:50) Thursday, 05/01/2008 Final Exam: (8:00 - 10:30) Thursday, 05/08/2008 Grading Policy: You are required to take all three exams. If you miss an exam, a grade of zero will be given. There is no provision for taking a make-up exam in this course unless documentation for a University-approved excuse (see Catalog) is received within one week of the exam date. All make-up exams will be offered on May 1, 2008. Note: UTA policy will not allow distribution of grade over the phone call or email. The three exams will contribute equally to the calculation of the final grade. The scores from each exam will be averaged and a letter grade will be assigned where A > 85%, B > 75%, C > 65%, D > 55%, F < 55%. NOTE: There will be no extra credit work to make up the grade. Attendance Policy: No mandatory attendance, but it is highly recommended. If you are dropped from this class for non-payment of tuition, you may secure an Enrollment Loan through the Bursar’s Office. You may not continue to attend class until your Enrollment Loan has been applied to outstanding tuition fees. Drop Policy: Please refer to university drop policy. "Scholastic dishonesty includes but is not limited to cheating, plagiarism, collusion, the submission for credit of any work or materials that are attributable in whole or in part to another person, taking an examination for another person, any act designed to give unfair advantage to a student or the attempt to commit such acts." Final Review Week: A period of five class days prior to the first day of final examinations in the long sessions shall be designated as Final Review Week. The purpose of this week is to allow students sufficient time to prepare for final examinations. During this week, there shall be no scheduled activities such as required field trips or performances; and no instructor shall assign any themes, research problems or exercises of similar scope that have a completion date during or following this week unless specified in the class syllabi. During Final Review Week, an instructor shall not give any examinations constituting 10% or more of the final grade, except makeup tests and laboratory examinations. In addition, no instructor shall give any portion of the final examination during Final Review Week. Classes are held as scheduled during this week and lectures and presentations may be given.
