This area of expertise cuts across many disciplines and incorporates such fields as anatomy, neurobiology, neuropsychology, pharmacology, physiology, psychiatry and psychology. This course will provide a comprehensive review of physiological processes that underlie animal and human behavior. Course Learning Goals/Objectives: Students are expected to learn how nervous system works and what are the underlying neural mechanisms that control our behavior. Topics will include: anatomical structure, molecular basis, sensory and motor systems, neurotransmitters, control of hunger, thirst, temperature, emotional disorders and schizophrenia, etc. Required Textbook: Biological Psychology, 9th edition by James W. Kalat. Specific Course Requirements: This is an intensive course. Students are expected to know a lot of detailed information. Be sure to read textbook BOTH before and after attending lectures. Examinations: There will be four exams. The exams will cover lectures, videos and assigned textbook readings. If you miss an exam, a grade of zero will be given. There is no provision for taking a make-up exam in this course unless documentation for a University-approved excuse (see Catalog http://www.uta.edu/catalog/general/academicreg) is received within three (3) days of the exam date. A student arriving late after the scheduled class start time, on an exam date, will not be allowed to take the exam after the first completed exam is turned in. Course Evaluation & Final Grade: The course grade will be based on the mean of the three highest exam grades. If you miss an exam and do not have an University approved excuse for doing so this will be the grade that is dropped from the final average. Grade Calculation: Note: UTA policy will not allow distribution of grade over the phone call or email. The three highest exam grades will contribute equally to thecalculation of the final grade. The scores from each exam will be averaged and a letter grade will be assigned where A 100-90%, B 89-80%, C 79-70%, D 69-60%, F <59%. NOTE: There will be no extra credit work to make up the grade. Attendance Policy: No mandatory attendance, but it is highly recommended. If you are dropped from this class for non-payment of tuition, you may secure an Enrollment Loan through the Bursar’s Office. You may not continue to attend class until your Enrollment Loan has been applied to outstanding tuition fees. Drop Policy: Please refer to university drop policy.
