Syllabus Name: Jessica Boyette-Davis Office Number: LS Room 507 Email Address: [email protected] Office Hours: Monday 12-1 Course Number, Section Number, and Course Title: PSYC / BIOL 3322.002 INTRODUCTION TO BEHAVIORAL NEUROSCIENCE Time and Place of Class Meetings: Monday 5:30-8:20; LS 100 Student Learning Outcomes: This class is a comprehensive survey of physiological processes and structures underlying human and animal behavior. Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to discuss the anatomy and physiology of the nervous system, explain synaptic and electrical transmission of the nervous system, demonstrate knowledge of various functional brain anatomies, understand the relationship between psychology and biology, and show understanding of how this relationship affects multiple modalities. Requirements: PSYC 3142 is an optional laboratory which, when taken concurrently with or after completion of PSYC 3322, satisfies a portion of the laboratory requirement. Formerly listed as PSYC 4322. Offered as BIOL 3322 and PSYC 3322; credit will be granted only once. BIOL 3322 prerequisite: BIOL 1441, 1442. Required Textbooks and Other Course Materials: Biological Psychology, Ninth Edition by James Kalat. Descriptions of major assignments and examinations with due dates: ***Attached are tentative topics and exam dates for the class days this semester. Please note that I retain the right to change any and/or all topics, exams, and dates listed herein.*** Grading Policy: Your overall grade will be on a 300 point scale. There will be 3 major exams, including the final exam, which will be graded at 100 points each. Therefore, an A is 270-300 points B is 240-269 C is 210-239 D is 180-209 F is 179 or below *This point distribution may be shifted*Attendance Policy: I will not deduct points if you choose to not attend class; however, if you do not attend, your grade will most likely suffer. Make-up Exam Policy: I strongly discourage missing an exam. However, if it is inevitable (i.e. a university approved excuse) and you need to makeup an exam, makeup exams can be taken on April 28 following lecture. Students should be present for lecture that day in order to know what time the exam will start (Please see the Exam Procedures section below). If a student needs to take a makeup exam, they should contact me by April 25 with necessary documentation of the approved absence so that I can prepare the appropriate exam. Exam procedures: On exam days, if you are more than 15 minutes late (i.e. You walk into class 15 minutes past the last exam being handed out), you will not be allowed to take the exam that day. There are several reasons for this. Primarily, I do not want late students to disrupt those that are working on their exam. Please follow standard test taking etiquette: turn off all electronic devices, cover your scantron, keep your eyes on your own exam, take off your hats, don’t disturb other students, etc. If I, or one of the proctors, suspect you of cheating, you will be asked to move to another chair to attempt to deter you. If the behavior continues, I will take up your exam and you will not be allowed to finish the exam. The exams will be 60 to 80 questions long, and students will be given 1 ½ hours to complete the exam. Drop Policy: Please refer to the university’s drop policy for deadlines and guidelines. Americans With Disabilities Act: The University of Texas at Arlington is on record as being committed to both the spirit and letter of federal equal opportunity legislation; reference Public Law 92-112 - The Rehabilitation Act of 1973 as amended. With the passage of federal legislation entitled Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), pursuant to section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, there is renewed focus on providing this population with the same opportunities enjoyed by all citizens. As a faculty member, I am required by law to provide "reasonable accommodations" to students with disabilities, so as not to discriminate on the basis of that disability. Student responsibility primarily rests with informing faculty of their need for accommodation and in providing authorized documentation through designated administrative channels. Information regarding specific diagnostic criteria and policies for obtaining academic accommodations can be found at www.uta.edu/disability. Also, you may visit the Office for Students with Disabilities in room 102 of University Hall or call them at (817) 272-3364. Academic Integrity: It is the philosophy of The University of Texas at Arlington that academic dishonesty is a completely unacceptable mode of conduct and will not be tolerated in any form. All persons involved in academic dishonesty will be disciplined in accordance with University regulations and procedures. Discipline may include suspension or expulsionfrom the University. "Scholastic dishonesty includes but is not limited to cheating, plagiarism, collusion, the submission for credit of any work or materials that are attributable in whole or in part to another person, taking an examination for another person, any act designed to give unfair advantage to a student or the attempt to commit such acts." (Regents’ Rules and Regulations, Series 50101, Section 2.2) Student Support Services Available: The University of Texas at Arlington supports a variety of student success programs to help you connect with the University and achieve academic success.
