CH302 Random Musings March 3, 20051. Quiz 3 is on Tuesday. I will have a practice quiz today that looks much like the real quiz. The questiontypes are as follows:Identifying intermolecular forces in moleculesHydrogen bonding theoryRanking physical properties of ionic compounds (think charge density)Ranking physical properties of moleculesTheory of physical propertiesPredicting the thermodynamics of phase transitionsInterpreting phase diagramsCalculating energy change in phase transitions2. Note that the only question types on quiz 3 are from Chapter 13 on liquids and solids—this being newmaterial I emphasized it rather than including problems about gases from Chapter 12. However you will still beresponsible for Chapter 12 on exam 2.3. For those of you planning to study over spring break, I will have the 36 question types from exam 2 readyfor you next Thursday.4. Extra credit. Folks have questioned the conditions under which I will provide extra credit opportunitiesduring the rest of the semester. As I mentioned, it depends on my sense of how much effort the class is making.Attendance at my help sessions this week and hits on my web site have been up quite a bit so this is a goodsign. Here is hoping the quiz goes well because I do want to give extra credit opportunities. Should I assignthe first extra credit opportunity it will be posted in the musings next Thursday as something you can do overthe break for fun.5. Worksheet 7 on the second half of material from Chapter 13 will be posted this weekend and covered at theupcoming peer training sessions. You should be able to do it immediately based on the lecture material coveredthrough today.6. My apologies about missing my peer meetings last Friday and now this coming Friday. I made a deal withone of my children that if he didn’t get a car when he went to college that I would pick him up in Houstonwhenever he wanted to come home (like for Spring Break being the good boy that he is.). So I will have to godown to Houston tomorrow again and one of the TAs will be covering my Friday session. When I get back Ithink I will be getting him a car.7. Public Service announcements.Undergraduate Research. This Friday March 4th is the first workshop in the series to prepare for theUndergraduate Research Forum in April. Come find out why you should present! If you are currentlyperforming research -you should present your results thus far. If you want to opportunity to do research -youcan make a poster to present your research interests so that interested faculty might consider taking you in theirlab (professors love initiative). There will even be a cash prize given by SURGE to the best research interestposter. The meeting is inn PAI 3.02 from 4 pm-6pm. Pizza provided.Natural Sciences Council's Spring Town Hall Meeting. Monday, March 7 5:00 - 6:00 pm WEL 2.304This is your opportunity to talk with your deans and administration about what you think of the College andwhat changes you would like to see made Panel guests include: Dean Mary Rankin, Dr. Jack Gilbert, Dr. DavidLaude, Dr. Brent Iverson, Dr. Ruth Buskirk, and Dr. Michael Starbird.Explore UT. This weekend is UT’s annual open house. More than 300 free activities, performances anddemonstrations will allow visitors to unravel scientific mysteries, unleash creative energies and uncover thewealth of educational opportunity at the University. If by some chance you wake up on Saturday beforenightfall, and wander across campus, you will find yourself in the middle of a million people exploring UT(hence the name.) Natural Sciences is well represented on the East Mall where even I will be there, presentingfour chemistry circuses every 30 minutes starting at 11:30. The loud explosions you will hear across campusduring that time will be me exploding hydrogen balloons. Maybe I will wake you up early.8. Spring Break. For some reason Spring Break lasts a lot longer than a week, at least as far as I can tell fromseeing the entire campus pretty much deserted the week prior to spring break. So on the off chance you won’tbe here next Thursday for the musings, my favorite spring break story (remember this was pre-MTV and Ididn’t know you shouldn’t visit your relatives) was when I went to Knoxville to see my cousins. While in aKrogers with my Aunt Ann and cousin Martha (why do you capitalize Aunt and not cousin?) it occurred to methat it would be fun to fill her shopping cart with as many boxes of green Jell-O as possible. So along with therest of the groceries, I added about 100 boxes without her knowing. She is going through the check out line, and after having about half the Jell-O rung up, the cashier asks her what she is going to do with all that Jell-O,and she turns to me and says, “grow up.” Later that night (though she was dying of an incurable illness, I gother to go out for ice cream, and as we were leaving the place about midnight, I got her to sing John CougarMellencamp lyrics “ life goes on long after the thrill of living is gone” at the top of her lungs. You had to knowmy Aunt Ann--that was pretty special, it beat the heck out seeing how many people in bathing suits you canstuff in the trunk of a Ford Taurus.8. Poetry corner.
