Autodesk Education Curriculum for Civil 3D Module 1: Civil Design Process and Civil 3D Module 1: Civil Design Process and Civil 3D The Module 1 instructor demonstration gave you a first look at the Autodesk Civil 3D application. This exercise lets you further explore the environment and features you’ll use in following modules. Task 1 The concept of a surface is fundamental to Autodesk Civil 3D. There are two types of surfaces and each has their advantages and disadvantages. In this exercise, you need to access the help system to answer the following questions: • What is a TIN surface? • What is a Grid surface? • What are the advantages of each? • What are their disadvantages? • Does Autodesk Civil 3D have any variations of these two surface types? Access Civil 3D and the Help System 1. Double click the Civil 3D desktop icon to start the application. 2. From the File menu select Open. Navigate to \Autodesk C3D07 Education Curriculum\Student Workbook\Module 01\Drawings\ and open file M1_Introduction_Student.dwg. 1-1Autodesk Education Curriculum for Civil 3D Module 1: Civil Design Process and Civil 3D Figure SW1.1: The Civil 3D Open Dialog Box 3. In the Prospector Toolspace, click the Expand Tree icon (+) next to the name of the drawing. 4. Click the Expand Tree icon next to Surfaces to list the surfaces, EG Topo Final and FG. These surfaces represent the finished existing ground topography (EG Final Topo) and the completed design for the lots (FG). 5. Go to the Help (F1) menu. 6. In the Help dialog box, click the Index tab. 7. Use the Type in the Key Word to Find field, and type surface. The surface section of help displays a list of topics. 1-2Autodesk Education Curriculum for Civil 3D Module 1: Civil Design Process and Civil 3D Figure SW1.2: Help Entries for Surface 8. Scroll down the topics list and double-click TIN to display the help entry in the adjacent panel. 9. Continue using the help system to answer the questions posed above. When you are finished, click the Help dialog box close button. Questions and Answers What is a TIN surface? A TIN surface is an arbitrary set of points that has connecting triangles between the points. What are the advantages of a TIN surface? A TIN surface is excellent for areas that have highly variable elevations, have irregularly distributed sample data and focus on large scale (small area) surveys. What are the disadvantages of a TIN surface? Tin surfaces take more time to create and are more space intensive. What is a Grid surface? A Grid surface has points that form a regularly spaced grid. NOTE: A Digital Elevation Model (DEM) is an example of a grid surface. 1-3Autodesk Education Curriculum for Civil 3D Module 1: Civil Design Process and Civil 3D What are the advantages of a grid surface? Grid surfaces load quickly and require less hard disk space. What are the disadvantages of a grid surface? None listed. What variations does Civil 3D use of a TIN and Grid surface? TIN and Grid volume surfaces. Task 2 Use the following steps to discover the answer to these questions: • What types of analysis can be done on a parcel? • What are the perimeter and area of lot 510313014? • What are the closure results for the lot? Find Site Data 1. Click into the Prospector Toolspace. 2. Expand the Site tree. 3. Expand the Parcels tree. 4. Click parcel 510313014 to highlight it, then click the right mouse button and select Zoom to. 5. With parcel 510313014 still highlighted, click the right mouse button and select Properties. 6. In the properties dialog box for the parcel, click the Analysis tab. 7. Click Inverse Analysis to view the inverse report for the lot. 1-4Autodesk Education Curriculum for Civil 3D Module 1: Civil Design Process and Civil 3D Figure SW1.3: Parcel Analysis Panel of Parcel Properties 8. Click Mapcheck Analysis in the upper right of the parcel properties dialog box to find the closure results for the lot. 9. When you are finished answering questions, click OK. Questions and Answers What are the two types of analysis that can be done on a lot? Mapcheck and Inverse What are the perimeter and area of lot 510313014? Perimeter – 563.12 and an area of 17,493.84 square units. What are the closure results for the lot? Error closure – 0.0015 and Error north 0.0006 Task 3 To prepare for further work with the introductory drawing that will be covered in Module 2, take a couple of minutes to view the point data for the M1-Introduction drawing. View Point Data 1. In Prospector, scroll back up to click Points, then click the right mouse button and select Edit… Points. This displays the Edit Points panorama dialog box. 1-5Autodesk Education Curriculum for Civil 3D Module 1: Civil Design Process and Civil 3D 2. If necessary, reposition and resize the panorama dialog box to view its contents. 3. Click into any Northing cell to view the Edit mode of the Edit Points dialog box. 4. View the help entry for this dialog box by clicking the Help icon in the upper right of the editor. 5. When you are finished viewing the help entry, close Help. Close the Edit Points dialog box by clicking the Close icon at the upper right of the dialog box. Exit Civil 3D 1. Click the close application icon at the upper right of the Civil 3D screen. Civil 3D always prompts you to save your work when exiting the application. In this case, no changes were made to the drawing. 2. Answer NO to the Save Drawing prompts. Well done. You have finished the student exercise for Module 1. You are starting to become familiar with the Autodesk Civil 3D environment, including the available help system. You have also gained a preview look at the data we will use in Module 2 which shows you how to work with point data. 1-6Autodesk Education Curriculum for Civil 3D Module 2: Points and Boundaries Module 2: Points and Boundaries This exercise lets you practice the points operations and techniques that you saw in the instructor demonstration. Your objective is to create points by importing a monuments point file which must be verified as correct and then used to create a site boundary. This establishes the boundary for the subdivision project that will be used in subsequent modules. Task 1: Create a Civil 3D Environment Before importing the points, a Civil 3D environment has to be created. This involves defining a description key set and creating a point group. After importing the points, you need to
