AutoCAD Map 3D, which is included in Civil 3D® and Land Desktop, features many powerful tools that allow engineers and surveyors to be more productive in their day-to-day work. You will learn how to work with other file formats, like ArcView® ShapeFiles, without losing their intelligence; to manage large data sets and convert coordinate systems of existing drawings; to automate annotation of large sets of objects by leveraging attached data; and to build a surface in Civil 3D by extracting the elevation data from GIS contours. Stay Connect with AU all year at www.autodeskuniversity.comrAutoCAD® Map 3D for Civil Engineers and Surveyors 3 Using the Drawing Cleanup Tools AutoCAD Map 3D includes powerful tools for cleaning errors in the geometry of your drawings. These errors may have been created any number of ways. Some errors occur when digitizing, particularly when object snaps are not set up or used properly. Other errors can occur when importing geometry from other sources. The Drawing Cleanup tools can be set up to perform clean up actions automatically in batches or interactively, providing the opportunity to examine each error individually. Fixing some errors can actually introduce other errors, for instance breaking crossing objects can leave behind many short line segments which might be perceived as dangling object errors, so it important to run some tools in a particular sequence. The Drawing Cleanup Wizard offers a number of options to clean up many types of errors. It's important to view drawing cleanup as a process, rather than just setting all the options and executing them in one operation. The Drawing Cleanup Wizard in AutoCAD Map 3D allows you to clean the following types of errors: x Delete Duplicates - as the name implies, deletes duplicate or overlapping copies of the same object within a specified tolerance. They are very difficult to find, unless you are specifically looking for them, and can occur any number of ways. x Erase Short Objects – deletes a line, or segment within a polyline, that is shorter than a specified tolerance. x Break Crossing Objects - breaks lines that intersect without having nodes (or endpoints) at the crossing. The Break Crossing Objects cleanup mode creates these nodes and makes the line on each side a separate object. x Extend Undershoots – extends a line that needs to be extended to intersect with another line. x Apparent Intersection – extends lines that were intended to intersect, but need to be extended to create the intersection. x Snap Clustered Nodes - locates nodes (endpoints of objects) within a specified tolerance radius distance of each other and snap them to a single location. x Dissolve Pseudo Nodes – joins polylines. Pseudo Nodes are endpoints that share coordinates with one other endpoint, and should be joined together to form a single polyline. x Erase Dangling Objects – deletes an object connected to another object at only one endpoint. Short dangling objects can be created by breaking crossing objects. Tolerance is important, because long dangling objects may not be errors, such as the centerlines of dead-end streets. x Simplify Objects – reduces the number of vertices in a polyline by removing all interior nodes (polyline vertices) that fall within the specified tolerance width. This can help reduce the file size of drawings that contain over-digitized polylines. x Zero-Length Objects - a line, or segment within a polyline, that begins and ends with the same coordinates. x Weed Polylines – adds or removes vertices from 3D polylines according to a specified weeding and supplementing factor.AutoCAD® Map 3D for Civil Engineers and Surveyors 4 1. Select Map Tools Drawing Cleanup. Note: If using the Geospatial Workspace, select Modify Drawing Cleanup. 2. Choose the objects that you would like to clean by either electing them manually or by selecting them by layer. It is important to clean groups of features one at a time. For instance, you don’t want to break parcel lines everywhere a sewer line crosses. 3. Click <<Next>> to continue to the Cleanup Actions panel. Here you indicate which cleanup actions to perform. 4. Double-click the desired cleanup action in the Cleanup Actions list to add it to the list of Selected Actions. Alternatively, you could select it and click <<Add>>. 5. Enable Interactive mode in the Options section. Interactive mode will identify and allow you to examine errors and make decisions about each error that it finds. If it is not enabled, all of the errors will automatically be fixed, without you knowing what or where they are. 6. Click <<Next>> to continue to the Cleanup Methods panel. Here you indicate the cleanup methods to use.AutoCAD® Map 3D for Civil Engineers and Surveyors 5 7. Click <<Next>> to continue to the Error Markers panel. Here you can customize the behavior, size, shape and color of the symbols used to identify different errors. Unique markers help find particular types of problems when using interactive mode, and allow you to come back to fix problems manually. 8. Review the default settings and click <<Finish>>. 9. Here you decide whether to fix each error individually or all found errors in one step. Expand the Error Type node in the
