Use mass media to perpetuate their wealth, status and power.Meritocracy Myth-(Mcnamee and Miller) Challenges the idea that the hardest working people will be the most successful in a society. Outside factors exist to suppress and deny many hard workers in reality.Imagined Community-A country is an exaggerated commuted. A person can not physically meet everybody in a perceived community, therefore it is imagined. Arab Stereotypes- Men are mostly portrayed as villans or Sheikhs, Women are dehumanized, humiliated and treated as sex objects.African American Stereotypes- Mammy, Pickaninny , Uncle Tom. Men are athletes, criminals and terrible parents.Hays Production Code-self induced code. Not allowed: Nudity, Drug use, affairs and homosexuality. Replaced by MPAAOrientalism-catholic church established the cultural boundary. Everything controlled in colonized way was far east. Church created Orientalism to justify subjugation and appropriation of their goods. Gender Theory-From birth you have been taught by society what is appropriate for you. Consequences because it is taught at a young age. Components of Masculinity- Emotional detachment (cannot show emotion), competitiveness and sexual objectification of women. White Savior Film-White family or person saves minorities who come from poor economic backgrounds.White Priviledge-White people in society have natural advantages in societies over minorities.Color-Blind Racism= Basically being racist in subtle ways. Saying something questionable and then saying “but I have black friends” and stuff like that. Gender Roles-The accepted roles given to males and females in a society. Males(violence, toy guns,etc…) Women(dolls, pink, toy kitchens,etc…)LGBTQ-Group of people that formed a society just based off of all of them being not heterosexual.DefinitionsMulticulturalism-A community that contains many different cultures in one.(USA)Hollywood Lowbrow-Crude humor, bathroom jokes, fart jokes, etc….. Provides service by allowing social mores to be ridiculed Film Noir- is a cinematic term used primarily to describe stylish Hollywood crime dramas, particularly those that emphasize cynical attitudes and sexual motivationsNationalism- form of patriotism based upon the identification of a group of individuals with a nation.Femme Fatale-Smart, cold, dangerous women in Film Noir who lead the main character to their demise. Created out of the fear of power women gained in the workplace during WW2.Bechdel Test- Film: 2 female characters with names, talk to each other about something other than a man. LGBT-Stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and TransgenderHomoeroticism-sexual attraction between males with no intent to fulfill it.Homosociality-nonsexual attraction between members of the same sex.Homosexuality-sexual attraction between members of the same sex.Transgender-People who think they are the other gender. EX. Guy thinks he is a woman trapped in a mans body. Blaxploitation-Series of wildly successful films intended for the black community that highlighted some unfavorable African American stereotypes. Emotional detachment- don’t behave or show emotions like a women.Sexual Objectification of Women- women are dehumanized and treated as objects for sex.
