What are some reasons people live in geologically dangerous areas? Some cultural and agricultural reasons to live in dangerous areas are that the soil could be nutrient rich, the land would be inexpensive since it's a low-demand area, and there could be natural paths and roads within the area. The view would be an ignorant reason and population growth could also be a factor.2. Is the geological landscape controlled by gradual and unrelenting processes or intermittent large events with little action in between? Provide an example to illustrate.Geological landscape is controlled mostly by intermittent large events but there are numerous small events, fewer larger events, and only rarely a giant one. An example of this would be a volcano awakening for a short period of time, releasing gasses, heat, smoke, etc. but then becoming dormant again. But, the volcano actually erupting is what would cause the geological landscape to change.3. Some natural disasters happen when the equilibrium of a system is disrupted. What are some examples? An example of this would be hurricanes. They occur when a warm front and cold front come together which creates clouds, thunderstorms and eventually strong winds.4. Contrast the general nature of catastrophic losses in developed countries versus poor countries. In developed countries, the economic losses are usually higher on average. In poor countries, the casualties are much more catastrophic.5. What are the main reasons for the ever-increasing costs of catastrophic events? The main reasons for the ever-increasing costs of catastrophic events are there are more people in the paths of these events and the value of the property at risk are rising. 6. If people should not live in especially dangerous areas, what beneficial use is there for those areas?Parks, wildlife preservations and natural areas are some beneficial uses of these areas. 7. When is a large event such as a major earthquake not a disaster? An earthquake occurring in an area where it does not affect anyone would classifya large event such as a major earthquake as not a disaster.8. When an insurance company decides on the cost of an insurance policy for a natural hazard, what are the two main deciding factors?Insurance companies calculate the cost by factoring the probability of an event occurring and the probable cost of losses.9. Describe the general relationship between the frequency and magnitude of an event?Events of lower magnitude are higher in frequency while events of higher magnitude are lower in frequency.10. When people or governmental agencies try to restrict or control the activities of nature, what is the general result? When people or governmental agencies try to restrict or control the activities of nature, the general result is that the problems either move somewhere else or they are mitigated for a while until the issue is greatly magnified.11.What kind of information must be assembled to make hazard predictions?Information about past disasters/occurrences such as the areas they occurred andtheir frequency to predict future hazards.12.What is a precursor event?A precursor event is an event that precedes a natural disaster which commonly is seen as a warning of the upcoming devastating occurrence.13.Explain how population growth increases the number of disasters. If there are more people living in an area that natural disasters are likely to occur in, (from population growth and more land being needed for housing, businesses etc.) there will be more people in that area to be affected by that natural disaster.14.What are the stages of disaster recovery? The three phases of disaster recovery are the emergency, restoration and reconstruction phases.15.Provide 3 methods of hazard mitigation.3 methods of hazard mitigation are land planning, risk assessment and engineering
