PSYC 210CHAPTER 11 NOTESPhysical Growth - Growth slows compared to preschool and adolescent years. - Children normally gain 5 lbs. and 2 1/2 inches per year. - Muscles grow stronger. - Lung capacity increases which helps with endurance. - Boys and girls are generally equal in physical abilities. - Many motor skills improve due to increasing body maturation and basic practice. - Skills are influenced by practice, growth, brain maturation and genetic talent.Obesity Obesity is a growing problem in our culture. It is defined as weighing 20 pounds or more over the average weight for a particular age. Obese children face many problems:- Physical---orthopedic and respiratory problems - Social-----rejection, poor self-esteem, depression, behavior problemsCauses of obesity:- Heredity - Low activity level - Amount and types of food eaten - Food related attitudes in society (use food to console and reward) - Over-feeding - Television watching, video games and computers decease physical activityDevelopmental PsychopathologyDevelopmental psychopathology is a new field applying observations and insights from the studies of normal development to the origins and treatment of childhood disorders.Autism is one of the most severe disturbances of early childhood. Autistic children are unable and/or uninterested in communicating with others. It is usually detected very early in life when communication deficiencies appear. There are some suggested reasons for autism such as heredity, prenatal and postnatal damage.Learning Disabilities are defined as conditions which exist when the child has no apparent physical problem, is not intellectually slow, is not in dysfunctional living situation, and does not lack basic education, yet their aptitude does not measure their performances in one or more areas. At least 10% of our children have some form of learning disability.Page 1 of 2PSYC 210ADHD- Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder- ADHD children have difficulty concentrating. They have short attention spans. - ADHD children are usually impulsive, distractible and some may be aggressive and disruptive in their behaviors. - Possible causes for disorder include genetics, prenatal and postnatal problems. - The diagnosis and treatment with drugs for ADHD has become a much debated issue.Page 2 of
