Losing friends to deathGenerativity- We have a God-given need to be "working" and creating something. - Mandatory retirement is now illegal in the United States. - In 2000 the ceiling was removed for the amount of money you can earn and still draw Social Security. - Majority retire because they want to. - Many older adults enroll in continuing education programs.Affiliation Needs- Presently, about 60 percent of Americans aged 60 and older are married. They tend to be happier, healthier, and wealthier than those who never married or who are divorced or widowed. - Most believe their marriages improve over time. - The death of a spouse is one of life's most disruptive experiences. You lose a friend, a lover, income, reduced status, circle of friends, daily routines, and the loss of identity. - Older people's satisfaction with life is connected more to their circle of friends than to theyounger members of family.The Frail Elderly- Defined: The physically infirm, the very ill, or the cognitively impaired.
