Hollywood Goes to SchoolMovies are often made to demonstrate to the audience what life is like in the eyes of others and to connect with them on a emotional level. Since the early 1980s, movies has expanded and created a more convenient way for people to be able to watch them with out going to the movie theaters over and over again. With the growth ofmovies it has truly impacted society. In the article Hollywood Goes to School:Recog-nizing the Superteacher Myth in Film, Adam Farhi demonstrates how movie films take the careers of teachers and make them into superteachers. One element that can be recognized is the class full of unruly students. Another element that can be recog-nized in this article is the fact that their can only be one superteacher. The last element that can be recognized in the article is the Hollywood teacher can make quick transfor-mation for the better among the students. Therefore, the article explains how films are influencing peoples minds by evaluating how Hollywood teachers teach their students from real life teachers. These are points that Farhi uses to assert that films portray a su-perteacher myth. First, the author Adam Fahri gives a good definition of what he thinks a su-pereteacher may be. He said that the formula of a superteacher is one teacher that is ranging from someone who has different ideas to someone who is an outright rebel. Then you give him a uncaring administration, or lack luster coworker and student every-one else has given up on. Next, with little assistance from someone and teaching meth-ods the teacher is able to overcome the odds and quickly transform the class. A lot of the time the teacher may have no personal life and soon becomes involved in the stu-dents. The last thing Fahri said to make a superteacher is that the teacher began toalienate someone in a position of power, which puts their job on the line. This is a good explanation of what a superteacher may be. Often times in movies the superteacher does display the characteristic Fahri listed above. The first and most common element that can be recognized in this article and in teacher films is classrooms full of unruly students. Often times in these classrooms theirare many students having conversation with each other and creating a disturbance for the other students who may be interested in learning. Fahri does a good job at explain-ing how the portrayal of students has expanded over the years. He gives good exam-ples like criminals who roam the halls at the beginning of the movie Lean On Me(1989)instead of being in the class and, the first line in the movieTeachers (1984) “All right, you little animals,” which is directed at the students. This shows the lack of respect and interest the students have in the beginning of most teacher films. Just the beginning of afilm can influence the audience and send the wrong message out. The second element that can be identified in realistic films is there can only be one superteacher in a movie. This means that there is usually one teacher that can try to change the lives of a class. On the other hand while the superteacher is busy with helping the students in their class the other teachers has given up on them, are bored, incompetent, and bitter. Also these teacher often try to tell the superteacher to give up and not try to teach. One good example that was used in the article to show how this is true was from the movie Teacher. In the movie their was a teacher name “Ditto” be-cause his daily class routine is made up of the students silently completing worksheets with their chair facing away from the teacher. This representation of teachers is one is-sues with superteachers that implies that a teacher must be out of the ordinary to bequalified. I would have to agree with the author Adam Fahri that it is not always right how films create the superteacher to be different from the other teachers. This creates an idea that the regular teachers aren't good enough to teach the students. The last element identify is providing unrealistic expectations for real teachers. Inmovies the Hollywood teachers are able to create quick transformations for the better among their students. The author uses the movie Renaissance Man (1994) to explain this theory. In the movie Bill Rago’s class have “sawdust for brains,” but they begin to comprehend Hamlet quickly. The film never shows how Rago is able to work such magic on his students. In most movies, superteachers do not need to teach because their students have always been smart, thats why Mr. Rago’s class was able to compre-hend Hamlet quickly. This is not true at all for teachers in the real world. Students are not always able to quickly pick up material they are learning and the class spends more time on it. In Hollywood films their is always a big jump from the students not knowing anything to knowing a lot. In Hollywood Goes to School Recognizing the Superteacher Myth in Films, the author Adam Farhi does a really good job demonstrating how films with su-perteachers in them are myths compared to real world teacher. He also gave good ex-amples on how movies that has superteachers in them can influence a persons views on how a teacher would be and corrupt young kids minds. His point on how movies takeunrealistic situation and make them seem true can mislead others. I think directors should take into consideration what the audience will get out of their films and make them seem more realistic and
