HIST 1311 1st EditionExam # 2 Study Guide Lectures: 10 -15War Hawks- southerners and westerners who were strong nationalist. - Such as John C. Calhoun (40 years), Henry Clay (served 42 years), and Felix Grundy. War of 1812- - Real cause of the war was the national honor and defending the cultural independence. - Political independence, economic independence- Naval War was more successful because the Americans navy sank several British ships. - Involved in the war were Andrew Jackson, Davey Crockett, and Samuel Adams. Final Battle of 1814 was at New Orleans. o Jackson became a hero and later the President after this war. o All sort of people were involved in this war and fought the war such as slaves, middle class, pirates, nuns, and etc. o Jackson won! Treaty of Ghent- - Ended the war of 1812 and restored diplomatic relations. - Get the “status quo” Adams-Onis Treaty- - The United States obtained Florida from Spain. - Secretary of State Adams abused the opportunity presented by Andrew Jackson’s unauthorized invasion into Florida to negotiate with Spain. Missouri Compromise- - Should Missouri be counted as a free or slave state became the issue in Congress. - The Missouri Compromise was sought to please BOTH North and the South. - Missouri and Maine- one slave, one free-would become states. - No slaver would be allowed above 36’ 30” in the Louisiana Purchase. Monroe Doctrine- - Britain proposed an alliance with the United States to prevent intervention by other European nations in Latin America. - Written by John Quincy Adams.- Monroe announced that the United States would oppose intervention by Europeans in Latin America. 1807- - Steam Boat discovered.- In 1807, Robert Fulton demonstrated that ships could be powered by steam. - Steam ships allow you to go up a river and down a river. - Development of the steam-powered railroad began in the late 1820s. 1820’s elections- - Clay, Adams, and Crawford were each supported by different regions. - Jackson attracted support in all regions. - Jackson won the popular vote but did not win a majority in the Electoral College. Morris. 1828 Elections- - Andrew Jackson will win and John C. Calhoun will be the VP. American colonization- slaves were sent to Liberia and the capital is Monroe. Gradual emancipation of slaves. John C. Calhoun- - Great defender of slavery - Slavery is a positive good that is needed. - States have the right to nullify federal laws, which states cannot do. Nullification Crisis- - South Carolina led the South’s opposition to protective tariffs after passage of the Tariff of Abominations. - Jackson opposed the doctrine of nullification. - Resolution of the crisis: Congress passed a lower tariff, and South Carolina canceled its nullification of the previous tariff. Peggy Faten Affair- - Calhoun is forced to resign. - Peggy was having an affair while she was already married. - Jackson supports her but Mrs. Calhoun opposed to Perry and did not want to see her at the White House, also she was the first lady since Jackson’s wife had died. Trail of Tears- - Remove all Native Americans west of the Mississippi river. - Thousands die- Not able to bury the dead. 1837-1842-- Economy in depression.- Martin sinks his presidency by making wrong choices such as cutting money spending from the government and etc. - Not re-elected for another term. War with the Bank and Jackson- - Many disliked the Second Bank of the United States because they saw it as benefitingthe wealthy only. - Jackson view: Banks favor the richer the more than the poor. Get rid of the main bankand have state banks instead.Slavery- - Not all Southerners owned slaves. - 1/3 had slaves while 2/3 didn’t own slaves. Passive Resistance- - Fake sickness and act like their ill. - Slow down your work process. - Break their tools. - Cut off fingers or toes so they wouldn’t have to work. Did not do: kill their masters. Underground Railroad helps slave’s escape slavery and get their freedom. Germans- - Moved west to become farmers- Fit in quite well- Motivated- Educated - Hardy- ONLY drawback is that they speak German and NOT English. Irish- - Poor- Not educated- Not well nourished- Many die young- Have low jobs that don’t pay good money. Romanticism- things concerning with the heart. Transcendentalists- Henry David Throe and Ralph Waldo Emmerson Transcendentalism- philosophy of religion that you can understand religion through nature. Leading Literary Figures during Transcendentalism- - Henry David Throe- books on civil disobedience and nonviolence - James Fenimore Cooper- Last of the Mohicans- Herman Melville- Moby Dick - Nathaniel Hawthorne- Scarlet Letter - Edgar Allen Poe- Raven, Tale and Tell Heart, and House of Usher2nd Great Awakening- - Same as the 1st (get right with god) but this time with a social message - Social message: watch out for evil such as drinking, gambling, and dancing. - Drinking can lead to wife abuse, children abuse, and miss more work. - Gambling can lead to losing money and becoming broke while dancing can lead to dancehall girls. - Emphasize on middle class values. Public Education Reform- - Build schools in the U.S. - Horace Mann - Educate children (find your talent, interest, and the abilities you have.) - Find out who you are and what you’re going to do is the purpose of school. - Catholic Bishop get upset so they built their own Catholic schools. Mormons- - Start in the 1830s and 1840s. - Created polygamy (multiple wives) Shakers- - Celibacy- abstaining from marriage and sex. - They die out because couldn’t convert enough people. Unity Community- - Group marriage (married to everyone) Log Cabin and Hard-Cider Campaign of 1840- - The Whig won with Harrison because: o They united
