HIST 1311 1st Edition Lecture 11Thomas Jefferson: - Born 1743- Peter Jefferson was his father and he dies when Thomas was fourteen and left behind a farm. He had six daughters and two sons, with Thomas being the oldest. - Thomas didn’t have a good relationship with his mother. - Thomas went to college to William and Mary. - Thomas was a very good student and spent about fifteen hours studying every day. - Graduated in 1762, then went to law school.- In 1768 he started building Montebello.- May 17, 1769: House of Burgesses. - In 1772, he marries widow, Martha. - June 17, 1765 he went to Continental Congress. - He was thirty-three years old when he wrote the Declaration of Independence. - He was the governor of Virginia during the Revolutionary War. - Jefferson and Martha had three daughters, and when Martha dies Jefferson goes into depression and doesn’t know what to do or how to raise his daughters. Jefferson in Paris: - Replaces Benjamin and becomes minister in Paris. - Brings his eldest daughter with him to Paris and puts her in a Catholic school. - Has many affairs and relationships with many women in Paris. - Jefferson made the sculptor Jon Scan Wo Dan. - Eventually brings his second daughter to Paris when the third dies. - Maria Cozway was one of the women Thomas had a relationship with but she was different from the other women and he fell in love with her. She was married and was twenty-five years old. She was an artist, painter and Catholic. - Over the course of time Maria eventually broke off the relationship with Jefferson and also got a divorce from her husband as well. - Jefferson’s oldest daughter kept on telling her father not to have so many relationships with so many women because he would get in trouble but Jefferson refused to listen so this made her make the choice of becoming a nun. - Jefferson’s 2nd daughter also dies.Sally Hemming:- She was one of the slaves of Martha, Jefferson wife. - Jefferson had a relationship with her and eventually she was pregnant with one of Jefferson’s kids.- Sally was younger then Patcy, who is Jefferson’s
