Impressions of the self- If an idea is not derived from an impression, then it does not count.- Think: From what impression is the idea of the self derived?o Hume looks into himself and just sees perceptions/impressions.- Hume then looks at how someone else’s mind works rather than his own mind.- Important analogies:o The self is a play in the theater.o The self is like a republic. The constitution is the organizing principle. If we take away constitution, then there is no republic. A republic needs an organizing principle just like the self does.- The soul is personal identity.II. Misconceptions of the self- Hume says the self is fiction: “fictionalism” (imagination)These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture.
