disease fitness level and your ability to care for yourself 1 In order to maintain optimal physical wellness it is important to make decisions regarding lifestyle behaviors that will aid in avoiding illnesses or injuries b Emotional wellness your mental health and your ability to understand and deal with your feelings 1 This involves dealing with your personal thoughts and feelings and identifying coping strategies to achieve and maintain emotional stability this may include professional help if necessary c Intellectual wellness requires constantly challenging your mind seeking out new experiences and challenges measured by the use of your mind and willingness to continually challenge yourself d Interpersonal wellness your ability to develop and maintain satisfying and are essential to physical and emotional health as well it is important to be an active participant in your community and contribute to society in a positive way e Spiritual wellness possessing a set live within your means and manage your money in a way that gives you peace of mind Spending less than you have coming in you have financial plans that allow you to not have stress caused by financial issues 1 Financial security can contribute to peace of mind and the absence of that security is an added stressor to emotional and physical health 3 The wellness continuum a The concept of wellness intentional self harm The Healthy People Initiative 1 Healthy people 2020 a Eliminate preventable disease disability injury and premature death b Achieve health equity eliminate disparities and improve the health of all groups c Create social and physical environments that promote good health for all d Promote healthy development and healthy behaviors across every stage of life Diverse Population Diverse Health Concerns 1 Sex and gender a Sex and gender characteristics effect chromosomes and the way they effect the reproductive organs b Society s expectations for the specific genders also play a role in health related decisions 2 Ethnicity a A complex mix of genetic variations environmental factors and health behaviors all play a role in one s overall wellness 3 Income and education a Generally people with lower income and education have a higher death rate with the leading causes being chronic illness or injury b If one is uneducated about how to lead a healthy life they will be more likely to make poor decisions regarding their health and wellness 4 Disability a More likely to be inactive which leads to being overweight causing health issues 5 Geographic location a Depending on the neighborhood and society people in different areas pay more or less attention to health related matters 6 Sexual orientation a Americans who identify as homosexual or bisexual are affected by factors that affect emotional wellness and personal safety Factors that influence wellness 1 Health habits a These can be good or bad for one s health 1 Beneficial habits include 1 Daily exercise a well rounded diet 2 Poor health habits include 1 Smoking stress hostile attitudes a poor diet and an inactive lifestyle 2 Heredity Family History a Family health history can help one determine which specific illnesses or conditions may be of concern to them 3 Environment a Includes potential risk factors that you may be around in your daily life such as quality of air crime violence rate drug and alcohol abuse etc 4 Access to health care a An adequate health care provider improves quality and quantity of life with preventative care and appropriate treatments when the need arises 5 Taking personal responsibility for your wellness Reaching wellness through lifestyle management 1 Getting serious about your health a Examine your current health habits 1 Evaluate
