We will cover a wide variety of topics, and students should leave the course with a basic familiarity of all key areas of management. Management 309 is a survey of the field of management for all non-business majors. The course objectives include the following: to provide a general overview of the field of management; to introduce students to the major activities and functions of management; and to illustrate for students the generic nature of management regarding other business functions. TEXTBOOK: Griffin, Ricky, Management (11th edition), South-Western Cengage Learning, 2013. ISBN-13: 9781285123707 COURSEPACK: You many obtain copies of the overhead slides for the course in one of two ways: 1) All slides for the course may be found on the course webpage in a PDF file. They may be downloaded and printed at your discretion. 2) Copies of the slides may also be obtained at the Aggieland Bookstore (in Copy Corner building) in the traditional “3 slides to a page with lines for notes” format in PowerPoint. GRADING AND EXPECTATIONS: Students are expected to attend class, and to stay current with the text. I will not be taking roll, however, I believe that attending class will give you a better understanding of the material, therefore improve your course grade and your retention of the material. I ask that students do not use a computer or iPad during class unless approved by me. On some days, class lecture will parallel the text, while others days, material will be covered that is not found in your textbook. You are responsible for everything covered in class, regardless of your attendance.Management 309 – Wesson Fall 2014 Page 2 Please check with other students regarding this information on days you are unable to attend class, as I do not provide that information due to absences. Class will start and finish on time each day, so make every effort to be here at the start of class. Please do not leave early unless it is absolutely necessary and unavoidable. If you have an appointment such that you need to leave early, please sit in a seat near the back of the classroom that day. If you arrive after class has begun, please sit in the back of the classroom so that you minimize distracting others while finding a seat. Course grades will be based on four exam grades. Each exam will be administered during regular class time and will consist of 40 multiple-choice questions. Each question, in turn, will be worth 2.5 points, therefore making each exam worth up to 100 points. Final grades will be based on the overall class distribution of total points, with a potential range from 0 to 400 points. 360 - 400 points A 320 - 359 points B 280 - 319 points C 240 - 279 points D 0 - 239 points F I will not curve individual exam grades or final cumulative points. Please do not ask for additional points at the end of the semester. Exams will consist of multiple choice questions. The exams will not be cumulative and will only cover material not covered by previous exams. I do not give exams early under any circumstances. If you enter the exam after a student leaves the exam, you will be given a make-up exam. Make-up exams are part multiple choice, part short answer/fill-in the blank. EXAM PROCEDURE: You are asked to bring your UIN (NOT SS#) and photo identification with you on test days (e.g., student ID card or driver’s license). You also are responsible for supplying your own scantrons for all tests. The appropriate form is the “Texas A&M University Measurement and Research Services” scantron. It is 8-1/2” x 11” and is blue-gray in color. In addition, be sure to bring number #2 pencils to class on test days. There will be a 5-point penalty deducted on your exam grade (equivalent to two missed questions) if you fail to fill out the scantron correctly. ADA POLICY: The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is a federal anti-discrimination statute that provides comprehensive civil rights protection for persons with disabilities. Among other things, this legislation requires that all students with disabilities be guaranteed a learning environment that provides for reasonable accommodation of their disabilities. If you believe you have a disability requiring an accommodation, please contact the Disability Services in Suite B118 in Cain Hall, or call 845-1637. For additional information, visit disability.tamu.edu. No accommodations will be provided to students unless they are registered with the Office of Disability Services. Those students that are registered should contact me at least five days prior to the first examination.Management 309 – Wesson Fall 2014 Page 3 SCHOLASTIC DISHONESTY: Scholastic dishonesty (including cheating and plagiarism) will not be tolerated. Scholastic dishonesty by a few is grossly unfair to the majority of students who are honest. Cases of apparent scholastic dishonesty will be pursued to the fullest extent allowed by University regulations. AGGIE HONOR CODE: “An Aggie does not lie, cheat, or steal or tolerate those who do.” Upon accepting admission to Texas A&M University, a student immediately assumes a commitment to uphold the Honor Code, to accept responsibility for learning and to follow the philosophy and rules of the Honor System. Students will be required to state their commitment on examinations, research papers, and other academic work. Ignorance of the rules does not exclude any member of the Texas A&M University community from the requirements or the processes of the Honor system. For additional information please
