03 06 2014 Comm 375 2 27 Lecture Stereotypes What are common stereotypes How are they perpetuated by the media Generalizations not always bad but can be bad There are exceptions to the rules Why do we use stereotypes To make sense of things we don t know about Schemata the way our brain frames something takes it in commits it to memory and makes it accessible later role schema gender roles nuclear family roles etc Ethnic stereotypes white men can t jump Asian drivers African Americans like fried chicken watermelon Sambo racial term used as a restaurant name Jackie Chan comedians reinforcing stereotypes about their respective ethnic groups Linsanity Jeremy Lin basketball player broke stereotypes YouTube video blonde ditzy girl talking about Asian people s manners and talking on their phones in the library during finals week at UCLA rebuttle video Song Race in the Media How ethnic groups are depicted in the media How are we affected by those depictions Intergroup comparison blacks depicted more commonly as perpetrators of crimes than whites blacks depicted as more likely to commit felonies Interrole comparison African Americans more often depicted as criminals and much less often as law enforcement officers Whites more commonly portrayed in law enforcement Interreality comparison In LA county crime arrests reflect White 28 Blacks 21 Latinos 29 In news depictions crime arrests are reflected as Black 37 White 21 Lation 29 portrayals for whites and latinos are being lessened while portrayals for Blacks are being inflated Depictions best to worst Whites Asians Latinos Blacks This hierarchy reflects public opinion as well Big picture the media is portraying these races in a slanted manner and the public is believing it YouTube video Dove video about body image photoshopping models Body Image Body dissatisfaction body image disturbance We are taught by media to attribute certain traits to people based on body shape appearance unhealthy eating habits Tyra Banks seems hypocritical when speaking on these issues because she is a supermodel Social comparison theory Festinger 1954 impacts self esteem outcomes partner violence male aggression social isolation loneliness low self esteem desire to be unhealthily thin economic gender disparity depression 03 06 2014 03 06 2014
