Adjustment Disorder:1. Stressor is identifiable2. Marked distress that is out of proportion3. Significant impairment 4. Symptoms must develop within 3 months of exposure to stressor5. Once the stressor is terminated, the symptoms can’t last more than 6 months6. Does not represent normal grieving 7. Reactive Attachment Disorder and Disinhibited Social Engagement1. Diagnosed in children when they have experienced a pattern of extreme insufficient care such as social neglect and deprivation, repeated change in primary caregiver, or being raised in an environment where they weren’t given enough attention and attachment2. It must start when the child is at least 6 months old, but less than 5 years old. 3. Symptoms of Reactive Attachment Disorder:a. Withdrawn attitude toward caregiverb. Inhibited emotionc. Doesn’t seek comfortd. Social and emotional disturbance i. Marked by minimal social responsiveness to othersii. Limited positive emotioniii. Episodes of fearfulness and irritability4. Symptoms of Disinhibited Social Disorder:a. Too attached to other peopleb. Has interactions with unfamiliar peoplec. Overly familiar with age inappropriate behaviord. Doesn’t check back with caregiver once going offe. Willing to go off with unfamiliar adultsiii. Acute Stress Disorder and PTSD:1. In both disorders, the person had exposure to actual or threatened death, serious injury, or sexual violation2. The person has directly experienced the event, witnessed the event first person, learned that the event happened to a close friend/family member, or have been unwillingly and repeatedly exposed to the event (ex: police officers, firemen)a. Acute Stress Disorder – begins 3 days to 1 month after trauma, requires 9 or more of the following symptoms:i. Intrusion Symptoms:1. Recurrent involuntary memories2. Recurrent distressing dreams 3. Dissociative reactions (flashbacks) that feel as if the event is happening4. Intense or prolonged psychological distressii. Negative Mood1. Persistent inability to experience positive emotions2. Clear dissociative symptoms (altered sense of reality, inability to recall the event)iii. Avoidance Symptomsiv. Arousal Symptoms1. Sleep disturbance2. Irritability3. Angry outbursts4. Hypervigilance5. Problems concentratingb. PTSD – can begin more than 1 month after trauma, must have some symptoms from each of the following categories:i. Intrusion Symptoms1.
