This is What Democracy Looks LikeCurrent LectureThis is What Democracy Looks Like● People in Seattle (1999) protested the WTO because they believed that people should come before profits● Protesting globalization, IMF, WTO, World Bank○ peaceful protest● Blocked out delegates from getting to their jobs--IMF, World Bank, WTO● Police promised to be peaceful as long as the protesters were peaceful.○ protesters remained peaceful but the police gassed them in attempting to get them to leave● 50,000 people gathered in a stadium to protest WTO internationally in Seattle○ from there they peacefully marched into downtown Seattle○ University of Washington students were present○ once downtown cops wanted to redirect the protesters○ one person broke a window and everyone was up in arms about it○ cops tried to move protesters out of the downtown areas with gas guns■ media portrayed the cops as the good guys● Police dragged out and attacked the peaceful protesters in Seattle○ arrested people that looked like they were protesters or were heading to join the protest● On Wednesday the major made it illegal to buy, sell, or possess a gas mask○ to hopefully stop protesters and take away protection for them● These protests and police brutality went on for days● After 630 people were arrested protests went on world wide in support of the WTO protesters○ multiple lobbyist groups also joined the
