Social MovementsCurrent LectureSocial Movements● Social movements-- loosely or tightly organized collective efforts by relatively powerless groups to affect social or political change operating outside of institutionalized political channels.○ Ex: civil rights movement, global justice movement, environmental movement● Key Characteristics of Social Movements○ operate outside of the institutional political system○ arise due to groups exclusion from “normal” institutional politics○ are resisted by those in power● Goals of social movements○ redistribute material resources more equitably■ labor movement, global justice movement○ gain full citizenship■ civil rights , women’s rights, gay rights movements○ redefine societies values, norms and priorities■ environmental and anti-war movements● Sources of social movement power○ how do powerless people exercise power?■ large cohesive groups■ consent (major part). stop consenting to authority you do not approve of.Consent is required to authorize power.■ Withholding consent is the secret to power for powerless people ○ by withholding consent..■ refusing to participate in everyday life■ denying others their labor■ most effective when done collectively● Movement tactics and Strategies○ civil disobedience-- purposely and openly violating the law viewed as unjust○ street protests-- marches, parades, rallies○ strikes-- refusing to work to force employers to concede to demands○ boycotts-- refusing to shop, buy or patronize a targeted enterprise● Elite responses○ repression○ co-optation○ de-legitimizing strategies○ covert
