Final Report Alternative Wastewater Treatment Designs for Green Acres Sanitation Kokomo Indiana April 2003 DISCLAIMER The contents of this report were prepared by senior civil engineering students in the design and synthesis class of Rose Hulman Institute of Technology Pioneer Consulting Group is a fictitious company created by seniors Bryce Gast Derek Hughes David Korman and Wendy Packard for the purpose of this class We feel confident in our work as students however you should be aware that we are not registered professional engineers All material presented herein should be reviewed and approved by a professional engineer prior to construction Executive Summary Mr Dennis Jusko owns the Green Acres Sanitation wastewater treatment plant located in Kokomo Indiana This plant is in the middle of the Green Acres subdivision of 203 homes and a golf course surrounds the site The plant is permitted to handle 100 000 gallons of wastewater per day Currently the plant is not meeting state standards of water quality for the treated water it releases into Wildcat Creek The design considerations for this project included assurances that the effluent treated wastewater meets all Indiana Department of Environmental Management and Environmental Protection Agency standards for water quality In addition Mr Jusko has requested that innovative technologies be taken into consideration and green engineering practiced wherever possible After evaluating many aspects of the site and wastewater treatment plant Pioneer determined that the current plant was not meeting standards and probably could not be upgraded to meet these standards cost effectively In order to meet the treatment needs of this subdivision Pioneer has completed two designs a subsurface constructed wetland and a package wastewater treatment plant The subsurface constructed wetland will receive effluent from a primary clarifier 40 ft x 10 ft x 10 ft deep tank and will treat the wastewater well enough to meet current standards A chlorination system will follow the wetland area The surface area of the wetland will be approximately 4 7 acres with a 1 foot depth and a 5 9 day detention time Cattails will be the main aquatic plant utilized in the wetland for treatment A Bioclere package treatment plant was also investigated This plant also receives effluent from a primary clarifier same size and operates like a trickling filter This plant would also require a disinfection system to be placed after the treatment The Bioclere unit will consist of 5 units which operate at 20 000 gallons per day each Pioneer Consulting Group recommends that the current wastewater treatment plant be replaced with a Bioclere wastewater treatment plant This recommendation is based on several factors including upgrade ability availability of warranty size of required area and cost The cost of the constructed wetland is estimated at 449 600 The cost of the Bioclere unit is 495 600 These prices include the primary clarifier and construction but do not include disinfection processes Table of Contents 1 Project Description Page 1 2 Design Requirements Page 3 2 1 Client Requests Page 3 2 2 Constraints Page 3 2 3 atmosphere and a comfortable country lifestyle with easy access to nearby Kokomo a city of about 100 000 citizens Meandering throughout the quaint community is Wildcat Creek a gentle brook that provides pleasing scenery as well as irrigation water for a golf course nestled within the subdivision Rather than septic systems or city sewers the people of Green Acres rely on a thirty five year old treatment facility Figure 1 owned by private entrepreneur Dennis Jusko to meet their wastewater treatment needs The facility resides within the golf
