Bryan Wienand CE 489 Life Long Learning Deliverable May 8 2007 List four or five significant changes in the CE profession over the last 10 20 years An increase in the use of computer modeling and computer technology in solving engineering problems This has been a disadvantage but has also provided problems of its own An increase in the sense of global awareness and the impact of design on the environment Greater importance placed on low impact development sustainability and L E E D Need to accommodate and meet the demands of a constantly expanding population which is growing faster than at any other time in human history List four or five significant changes likely to occur over the next 10 20 years A stronger emphasis on recycled materials and development of innovative more efficient materials A stronger emphasis on public transportation and infrastructure in large urban areas Stricter codes regulations and guidelines to account for environmental factors and cost efficiency Energy efficient design will be more influential than ever before Competition with foreign markets will increase in correlation with supply and demand needs List four or five educational venues that will help you stay abreast of these rapid changes Remaining a member of ASCE and subscribing to professional publications Attending ASCE Conferences and Seminars for discipline specific topics Obtaining a Professional Engineering P E License Working in a foreign country or gaining exposure to a foreign market by traveling overseas List some of the significant educational steps in your 10 year plan that you are likely to use to stay current in your profession during the early portion of your career Constantly seek advice and guidance from superiors with more experience in my field Prepare for and pass the P E Exam after 5 years of practical experience Attend conferences seminars and educational opportunities provided by my employer Subscribe to CE magazines and publications Build and maintain a network of CE professionals Abide by the ASCE and NSPE Code of Ethics
