Psychology 107, Section 509, MWF 1:50-2:40 FALL 2011 Room: PSYC 337 Instructor: Dr. Terrence Barnhardt Email: [email protected] Phone: (979) 845-0381 Office: PSYC 216 Office Hrs.: M 2:45-3:45; W 2:45-3:45; F 11:30-12:30; or by appointment Required Textbook: Psychological Science, 3rd edition, by Michael S. Gazzaniga, Todd Heatherton, and Diane Halpern University-supported website: http://www.tamu.edu/faculty/barnhardt/ At this website you can find this syllabus, the research requirement handouts, the powerpoints for the lectures, the grade distribution, and other important announcements. Course Description: An introduction to the topics of contemporary psychology. Course Learning Goals/Objectives: The course will provide students with knowledge enabling them to take more sensitized courses in psychology. The course will also boost self-development and understanding. Course Schedule and Outline: There are 267 points in the class. You earn these points in three different ways. First, there will be four exams, with each exam having 50 multiple choice questions and each question being worth one point, for a total of 200 points. Second, there will be 15 quizzes, one on each chapter, with each quiz having 3 questions and each question worth one point, for a total of 45 points. Finally, there will be 6 assignments, with each assignment worth 2-5 pts, for a total of 22 points. Each exam will cover chapters from the book, the lectures over those chapters, and the powerpoints available at the website. The quizzes will cover the chapters in the book. The schedule of quizzes and tests and the materials they cover is on the reverse side of this sheet. Test grades and your final grade are determined on a curve. Other information: Students are not allowed to use any electronic device, such as phones or laptops, during class. Each exam will be counted equally toward your final grade. If you miss an exam because of illness or emergency, you must contact the instructor within 24 hrs. of the scheduled exam time. You must also provide a written excuse from a doctor or a policeman, or an official death notification in order to qualify to take the makeup. If you miss an exam, and you have a written excuse, you will be able to take a makeup exam without penalty. The makeup time should occur as soon as possible after the missed exam. If you miss an exam without good cause (by oversleeping, for example), you will be penalized (minimum 5 [out of 50] test point reduction) and you could potentially receive a zero for that exam. Being late for an exam can also result in a penalty. You'll also need to earn 14 credits to complete the research requirement associated with this course. You can earn these credits by participating in experiments and/or writing short papers. Each 1/2 hour experiment counts as 1 credit and each short paper counts as 2 credits. The mechanics for both experiment participation and writing the short papers are described on separate sheets. You can do any combination of experiments and papers. The credits do not get added into your point total for determining your final grade. Failure to complete the requirement will result in an incomplete for the course. Attendance Policy: While it is probably wise to attend every meeting of this class, your grade will not be adjusted based on your attendance. If you do come to class, please plan on staying for the entire class. Leaving class early will not be tolerated unless you have prior permission from Dr. Barnhardt. ADA Policy Statement “The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is a federal antidiscrimination statute that provides comprehensive civil rights protection for persons with disabilities. Among other things, this legislation requires that all students with disabilities be guaranteed a learning environment that provides for a reasonable accommodation of their disabilities. If you believe you have a disability requiring an accommodation, please contact the Department of Student Life, Services for Students with Disabilities in Room 126 of the Koldus Building, or call 845-1637.”Texas A&M University Philosophy of Academic Integrity: Aggies do not lie, cheat or steal nor do they tolerate those who do.
