HOUSTON COMMUNITY COLLEGE SOUTHWEST Installing and Configuring the Windows Vista Operating System - Academy ITSC 1091 Date and Time of class: Class CRN: Instructor’s Name: School Site: Phone number:-2- Revised 4/24/07 HOUSTON COMMUNITY COLLEGE • SOUTHWEST COURSE SYLLABUS Installing and Configuring the Windows Vista Operating System - Academy ITSC 1091 This three-day instructor-led course provides students with the knowledge and skills to install and configure Windows Vista desktops. This is the first course in the Windows Vista curriculum and will serve as the entry point for other Windows Vista Technology Specialist courses. Topics address recently identified current events, skills, knowledges, and/or attitudes and behaviors pertinent to the technology or occupation and relevant to the professional development of the student. This course was designed to be repeated multiple times to improve student proficiency. COURSE OBJECTIVE This course is designed to train IT Professionals wishing to become technology specialists proficient in Microsoft's Windows Vista technologies. GOALS Students will learn: • Installing, securing, networking, and browsing Microsoft's Windows Vista. • Configuring a Windows Vista desktop that is secure, on the network, and ready for browsing. LEARNING OUTCOMES Students will demonstrate mastery of these objectives by successfully completing all hands-on, in-class labs that are specific to each unit goal. Students will be able to: • Install Windows Vista. • Upgrade to Windows Vista Ultimate Edition. • Configure post-installation system settings. • Configure basic networking. • Configure advanced networking. • Configure user account security. • Configure network security. • Configure Internet Explorer 7.0. PREREQUISITE Before attending this course, students must have: • Familiarity with PC hardware and devices. For example, ability to look into device manager and look for unsupported devices. • Basic TCP/IP knowledge. For example, that you need to have a valid IP address. • Basic Windows and Active Directory knowledge. For example, domain user accounts, domain vs. local user accounts, user profiles, and group membership. • Experience with mapping network file shares. For example, familiar with UNC paths, mapping local resources to server/share.-3- Revised 4/24/07 • Experience with running commands from a command window. For example, DOS command prompt. • Experience with reviewing BIOS settings. In addition, it is recommended, but not required, that students have completed: • First Look Clinic 5056 - First Look: Getting Started with Windows Vista for IT Professionals. • Hands-on-Lab 5057 - First Look: Getting Started with Windows Vista for IT Professionals. REQUIRED TEXTBOOK The provided student kit includes a comprehensive workbook and other necessary materials for this workshop. COURSE REQUIREMENTS AND EXPECTATIONS This is a 24-hour instructor guided course. Student will complete hands-on, in-class assignments. ATTENDANCE To fully benefit from the class, students are expected to attend all classes. REQUIREMENTS FOR COURSE COMPLETION CERTIFICATE To receive a Certificate of Completion and be awarded Continuing Education Units, students must meet the following requirements: • Attend at least 80% of scheduled class time • Complete the course lab demonstrating 80% mastery of course concepts or equivalent skills demonstration to instructor. OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENT-FACULTY INTERACTION Students are encouraged to ask questions and request clarification or guidance as needed during class. A question and answer period is always provided. OPPORTUNITIES FOR CAREER EXPLORATION Topics relevant to future employment and career exploration opportunities will be presented to the students, including certification and degree prospects. OPPORTUNITIES FOR SUPPLEMENTAL INSTRUCTION Students are informed of instructional aids and resources, including books, other publications, and web sites relevant to the course. SPEAKER FORUM At the discretion of the instructor, speakers may be invited to address the class on pertinent topics.-4- Revised 4/24/07 CELL PHONES AND PAGERS Cell phones and pagers can be disruptive during class.
