HIST 151 Lecture 19 Outline of Last Lecture I Woodrow Wilson II Causes of the War III U Boat and the Lusitania IV Zimmerman Note V A E F VI Espionage and Sedition Acts VII C I P War Industries Board VIII Wilson s 14 Points Outline of Current Lecture I Treaty of Versailles II WWI Aftermath III Return to Normalcy IV Harding Coolidge and Hoover V Teapot Dome Scandal Current Lecture Treaty of Versailles Carved up Central powers The Ottoman Empire was now Turkey Austria and Hungary were now separate Germany had to give up some land which became Poland and Czechoslovakia The League of Nations was created which the US didn t ratify or join because we didn t want to be a part of any world affairs any longer Germany had to sign the War Guilt Clause which means they had to take absolute responsibility for the war This was written by the Allies US wasn t a part of this either These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor s lecture GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes not as a substitute WWI Aftermath Hundreds of thousands of US soldiers dead or ruined from mustard gas PTSD etc Hundreds more die of Spanish Influenza which the soldiers brought back with them More people go on strike than any of the past strikes combined The US becomes the largest creditor in the world The first Red Scare happens and the FBI emerges US amps up military arms The tank Deadly race riots because black soldiers were treated worse here than abroad Return to Normalcy Also called the Republican Ascendancy Back to the good old days of deregulation and nearly no government Isolationism and no reform The end of the Progressive era Harding Coolidge and Hoover Harding was the first of the three extreme Republicans in the White House His administration was by far the most corrupt and even worse than Grant s Appointed all of his friends Ohio Gang to the cabinet They weren t just sitting around drinking and playing cards like Grant they were bleeding the country dry of resources which will bring us to the Teapot Dome Scandal Coolidge was second He was called silent Cal because he never spoke and always hid from the public eye He was the governor of Massachusetts and fired the entire Boston Police Force for going on strike Hoover was the last of the Republicans He was smart and called the great engineer However he saw the Great Depression coming and did nothing about it because the policy was hands off Teapot Dome Scandal Harding administration Teapot Dome is a place in Wyoming that was once the biggest domestic source for oil in the US Harding put his least trustworthy friend in as Secretary of the Interior public domain This man leases the oil rights from Wyoming to Standard Oil which takes us back to the Gilded Age He got extremely wealthy extremely fast while bleeding the country of essentially ALL of its domestic oil It s still an ugly scar on the country literally and figuratively Harding was going to face articles of impeachment but he died while in office before he could be charged
